Suppose you are addicted to eating. It would not be fair if i said STOP from out of nowhere. The best question is WHY? go beyoond face value and get into the pyche of the person. Understand what makes them drink so much, why, what are reasons; that is the first step to changing the mind. If you can soothe the pain by UNDERSTANDING the individual you have mastered the art. Hence alcholic meeting and discussions are so popular and successful, they confront ht e problem. "To seek the truth one has to face the truth" nothing is ever delivered to you on a plate in this world. it takes time, effort, courage and above all it takes commitment. You must do the thing that which you cannot.
Behavioural scientists would be great at this sort of stuff. Substitute the alcohol for something else - something that will aid your knowledge or your growth into this world. CONDITION THE MIND - so that when the mind says i need alcohol - you retreat to the substitute.
Life is short. Alcohol makes it shorter. Live. Be young. Explore and Enjoy. It is then that you can say to yourself "i have lived through this horror, i can take anything that comes along"

You can't. Don't you hate it when somebody's trying to boss your mind?
Here's a hint on changing the body, though: Spices and red meat and possibly other foods incite a craving for alcohol. If you can possibly ease the alkey into some really clean living (lots of green leafy veggies, lots of water, reasonable exercise, quiet sleep, emotional relaxation) you may find it eases their cravings. Be sure to give 'em lots of love, too. Alcoholics are very emotionally sensitive people.

i am not a doctor but i am a recovered alcoholic for 7+ yrs you cannot change the mind of an alcoholic the only person who can change that mind is that person you can lock them up you can force them to rehab but no matter what you do until that person reaches a bottom point in their own life and in their own heart decides they have had enough it wont happen they may try to stop to please you but until they are truly ready they will go right back to it sometimes it takes a tragedy in their life to wake them up and sometimes it never happens sometimes they choose to die an alcoholic because that is the only way they will stop for good there are many good books and groups for this but the key to those being good is for that person to truly have the desire to stop that life please dont preach to them because sometimes that makes them do it more my prayers are with you and i hope that this person sees the light have a good day

You can't change their mind. They have to get to the point where they're ready to make the decision for themselves. The question you need to ask yourself is if you're prepared to take the ride to the bottom of the barrel with them, or if you want to cut your losses now, and move on.

Unfortunately they'll have to make their minds up to change. Also one can go to an detox center and go to AA meetings. At the center they have doctors that come there to visit the patients. Good Luck.

Its a habit and in 21 days it can be broken by focusing one day at a time, not looking at many days , a person makes up mind to stop and works most diligently at it.

u cant they have to make the decision therself to get help because if they do it for you it will only be temporarary. believe me i've been there. the best thing you can do is talk to them when they are sober and explain to them what they are doing to therself and to the people they love. don't put them in a corner though because that will just drive them farther away and closer to the bottom of the bottle. good luck

AA is the best place to start for the alcoholic, for a friend al-anon, check it on the internet for your area...both are great and proven programs, but the alcoholic has to want to go.

You cannot change their mind. They just need to realize that it is an uncontrollable behavior and that they are more important than the alchohol.
