They are not as strict as they used to be, but you may have to keep some of them covered. Especially if they are gang related and could cause dissension.

Despite what people think the military still won't take just anybody. Since society is looking down upon tattoos the military is actually putting stricter rules on it. When you decide to enlist they take pictures or document each and ever one. If you get them once you are in they can't really do anything, but having tattoos on your lower arms and I think (not sure so don't quote me on it) lower legs can disqualify you for DI duty and recruiting duty. To get a better understanding talk with a recruiter they should be able to give you better knowledge.
In 2004 my unit had to put on our short sleeved uniform and any tattoo below the sleeve was documented again. So they do keep track and check up on it.

If you can see them an they cant be covered forget it. Got a band or something small on the back thats Ok. But anything else will be viewed as an attempt to just look cool, make up for basic insecurities and that you werent smart enough to not do it in the first place . Its just the military way. I hear Target is hiring.

No tats on your face or neck,(below the collarbone is what I was told was OK) no derogitory or gang related tattoos. MOST others are OK, simply need to define each, and why you have it. They will document all your tats, usually reqiring a picture, sometimes a waiver may be neccasary. I have three myself, and I have a buddy with full sleeves on both arms, and it wasn't a big hold-up, just more paperwork for the recruiter

also, some billets won't allow tattoos. Marines on embassy duty can not have any tattoos that show. That might have changed since i was in. but that was the rule in the 1980's. So with embassy duty no visible tatoos when wearing short sleeve shirts. (dress blues D)

I can only speak on the AF but the regs state that you can not have a tattoo that takes up more of 1/3 of your showing skin. You also cant have any tattoos above your collar or I believe on your hands. Then of course you cant have any gang or offensive tattoos.
Just to add to that you are also not allowed to have any piercings that show. This goes for even your ears as well.

I've heard that they don't, but my boyfriend is in the military and he has 7 tattos. I think its as long as you dont have them on your face or nothing then you are fine.

my husband has been a submariner for almost 6yrs and although he does not sport any tattoos several of his shipmates have multiple tattoos. I believe the general rule of thumb is that they must be able to be concealed if needed, so nothing on the face or anything like that. but i have seen sailors have tattoos on their arms and wear short-sleeved uniforms.
Hope that helps!

The best person to ask would be a recruiter - I don't think you have to worry unless the tattoos are in visible areas not covered by the uniform, then it might be an issue.

Things may have changed, but when my father was in the Marines in the 1950's, having a Tatoo was an offense for which you could be Court Martialed.
