I am interested in how this religion was founded, and in their astonishing claim that Jesus of Nazareth visited America.

Now I find that the Mormon religion was founded by a guy called Joseph Smith. An angel told him to dig up some golden plates which were in hieroglyphics so he couldn't read them. Fortunately the angel had thoughtfully provided some magic spectacles called the Urim and Thummim and when he looked through them he was able to translate the mystical plates, which sunbsequently disappeared again. The translation turned out to be the Book of Moroni.

This is indeed a fascinating tale, but then I know that many Christian fundamentalists place a literal interpretation on the bible so this must be a similar phenomenon.

Can anyone tell me that they truly, in their heart of hearts believe the story of Joseph Smith and the "Urim and Thummim "?

God does work in mysterious ways, doesn't he!!

Jesus said in John 10:16 "And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd." Some of the other sheep that Jesus visited were on the American continent. After the resurrection of Christ, Jesus visited the people on the American continent. Jesus wanted them to have a knowledge of the truth. This is recorded in the Book of Mormon.

Joseph Smith was led to the gold plates that the Book of Mormon was written on by an angel sent from God. God also provided him with the means to translate the Book of Mormon using the Urim and Thummim.

I don't understand why people so easily accept that God called prophets anciently, but the same people can't accept that God calls modern prophets. God is the same yesterday, today and forever. God told Amos in Amos 3:7 "Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets." Yes, I can tell you that I know that Joseph Smith was called by God to be a prophet. God lets us know the truth through the Holy Ghost when we ask Him in prayer.

I've heard the same history about Joseph Smith. I know some very nice mormons, but I don't beleive they have the truth and these scriptures explain why- Galations 1; 8 " However , even if we or an angel out of heaven were to declare to u as good news something beyond what we declared to u as good news, let him be accursed."

The urim and thummim were used in ancient Israel by the high priest to know God's decisions. - Exodus 28; 30 " And u must put the Urim and the Thummim into the breastplate of judgement, and they must prove to be over Aaron's heart when he comes in before Jehovah, and Aaron must carry the judgements of the sons of Israel over his heart before Jehovah constantly.

The Book of Mormon was actually written by the occult practice of magic/ divination/ clairvoyance. The story you heard, the one that Mormons tell, isn't true.

Joseph Smith dropped a "magical seer stone" into his hat, then buried his face in the hat and proceeded to dictate the Book of Mormon. He claimed to see in the darkened hat the words he dictated.

The gold plates were not even in sight as he dictated the Book of Mormon.

The witnesses include all 3 of the Three Witnesses of the Book of Mormon (the same people whose testimony appears in the front of the Book of Mormon), as well as Joseph Smith’s wife.

This evidence of the actual Book of Mormon translation method has been discussed in at least six different scholarly articles and several books by Mormon historians over the past 30 years.

BTW, Jesus was not preaching in America after His resurrection. The Second Coming has not happened yet!

Jesus must have also been a Backpacker...

Joseph Smith alleged to his followers that God had given some golden plates with the Book of Mormon on them and that when he had finished translating them, GOD took them back - Yeah, likely story!!!

It has always seemed rather strange that most of these so called new age religious cults have started there roots in the USA. Billy Graham, LDS ,Russellites (JWs)etc. Everyone of them has an underlying motif and that is to attract the gullible and lonely to join them and then part with as much money as they can

Ive met a few Mormons, and they seem to have a lot of respect for other religions, unlike most catholics Ive encountered. Perhaps they are the true Christians, and all the other ones are just pretenders. Just a thought. Oh, and I can tell that Blondie is a catholic, or 'christian'. And its spelled 'farce'.

The book of Mormon is a farse. The LDS church claims that it was written in addition to the Bible. However, the last sentence of the Bible says "And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book." Revelations 22:19

I recommend the book, "Under the Banner of Heaven". It gives great insight into how the LDS religion started and the different sects of it that exist today.
