When they say that merlot's shelf life is 8-10 years, does that mean after 8 or 10 years, we should open the bottle or else it will spoil? What does shelf life of a wine mean?

It means it is best to drink the wine within 8-10 years. Wine, can and does spoil.

It means how long will a bottle of wine last after it is opened. Its determined by when oxidation begins and when does it reach the point of being undrinkable.When a wine bottle is opened, air enters the space in the bottle. The oxygen in the air interacts with the wine and causes oxidation, a chemical reaction that will eventually spoil the wine.Just remember to cork the remaining wine.

shelf life is the time in which whatever product can stay on the shelf (in its prime) after which it's not suitable to remain on the shelf therefore the quality has reduced & by how much is the only question...
i do'n't drink alcohol so i wouldn't have any more specific information

This is how long the wine can be expected to be kept and still be drinkable. Up to that time, you should expect to be able to open the bottle and have a drinkable product. The wine could last longer, of course, as many wines last MANY years.

the shelf life of ANYTHING means the same,, it is the length of time the manufacturer says the product will remain at its peak quality,, after that time the quality will deteriorate,, this is of course following the recommended storage procedures and in an un-opened state

a shelf life means how long it will last in the store and in Ur house.........the same for food....if it has a short shelf life then it means it will spoil quickly........if it has a long shelf life then it means it will last long.

it means that you should drink it before its shelf life is up or it may loose its best flavor after that even possibly become vinegary tasting
