Grandma has to get more involved in what her grandson is doing on the computor. There are predators out there just waiting to entice the naive. If she is unsure how to set controls on the computor she should ask a friend, neighbour or family to help her get security features activated. The computor should not be in the child's room as it is difficult to monitor what is going on.Also she should limit the computor time as it can be addictive and the child should be encouraged to make friends , be in groups, sports etc.

Parental controls are free - you just need to activate them. The real question is: Does she know enough about computers, or did the 12 year old grandson tell her that when she asked him?

They would be through her server. Example...we have Verizon for service and Verizon enables parents to set parental controls. I know AOL and comcast do this as well. She should not have to pay for them. I agree, 12 is a little young to be in chat rooms...my son is 1 and I would never allow that.

She shouldn't have to pay for parentral contols! Tell her, if she has internet explorer, to tools ( at the top whenever you open up a page) then go to internet options, and then go to the privacy tab. This will allow you to custom set the privacy filter that controls what can be viewed on the computer and what cannot be viewed. I hope this helps!

you don't have to pay for parental controls
and a child under the age of 16 shouldn't be in any chat rooms to begin with. i think something needs to be done to change this, there's way to many online predators of too many sorts for a child to be online...wether it's in a chat room or on any certain web sites.
good luck
