sweety, there is NOTHING you can do, its something she must go thru and feel and grive on her on. i am a widow my husband died in 95 i was 34yrs old.........beleive me EVERY1 tried to help......the best thing you can do is: say.."grandma i dont know how you feel, but i know you are hurting. i miss my grandpa too.
ask her if she will tell you some stories.....how they met.....wht was their 1st date like? who was his best friend? beleive me she will LOVE TO TELL YOU STORIES......AT THE SAME TIME IT WILL HELP HER TO REMEMBER GOOD TIMES.
house pets are great!!!! some1 got me a shi-zu.
a dog is much better company than a cat.

good luck,
i will say a prayer for you and grandma

I worked for hospice for quite a few years and everybody is different so it's hard to answer your question. Some of the people I've worked with are actually more stressed by the open flood gate of visitors trying to "help them cope." A house pet might be a good option but it might be a burden as well. I think you should just talk to your grandmother and see how she feels about what she does and does not need to help her cope. Everyone is diff., some people need space . . some need to be surrounded by support.

As long as you know your grandmother is healthy in the mind and physically then you shouldn't worry. But ..maybe you could help by getting her some info on seniors clubs or groups for widows or is there friends of hers that you could call without her knowing ?..Maybe her friends could drop by more often to spend time with her..or get her out of the house more often. You could always write to her more often I always enjoy letters. After time she will learn to live with out her husband and probably be o.k and happy. Give it some time and if you are still worried then you could call her doctor and ask his/her advice on the next steps to take. One thing you should watch out for in her is depression. It is still a bit to soon to know because she is still grieving..Good luck
