Ril-Gainia sure, they might unintentionally take a life, but that's different, becasue they don't try to justify it.

map, I don't trust the police any farther than I can throw them

It's like that saying says "fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on you"

Too many police officers have proven their incompetance and self-interest for me to be stupid enough to to be able to let myself trust them.

I'm not going to answer an ignorant question like that.

My husband is a firefighter so that's easy for me to answer. Yes they do try but the sad truth is that they don't always save all lives. We lost a young family of 4 here about 3 years ago in a trailer house fire. They got them pulled out but it was to late. Very sad!

If you stop and think about it the police officers are first on the scene of any call 99% of the time. So actually they do save lives also by starting CPR or getting people out of a burning car or house. They don't just shoot people.

OK, well, *there's* a loaded question. A lot of time policeman save lives too. They can save someone from assualt. Sometimes, by catching someone and saying the right things to the person, they can teach the person a lesson and save them from a life of crime and drugs. How awesome is that? I'd be afraid to be a policeman because fire is a lot more predictable than criminals are. So for that reason I'd rather be a firefighter. But, most firefighters also work as paramedics. Paramedics are at a lot of risk too, because they often arrive at violent scenes.

Alright...

I've had some pretty wierd experiences with cops due to some close association with them. Plus, i knew a couple of cops personally considering they were family friends. I think the police force is invaluable to society. They do save lives. If you consider people that call in because they are getting robbed or people that have gotten murdered, they solve the case. It's really a question of morality. For instance, my brothers had gotten themselves into a fair bit of trouble in the past. The cops that dealt with them were complete pricks. There's really no other way to put it. In those cop's minds, my brothers were worthless pieces of scum because of what they had committed. This is where they go wrong. They begin to assume too much in too little time. They don't give fair chances because they think they've seen it all. They forget that everyone is different and that everyone deserves a fair chance. It's human nature to judge. But when it's an officer of the law that's doing the judging, it's b u l l s h i t. They should take the facts and go from there. It's not about personal issues, it's about doing your job and doing it right. I have little respect for the cops that dealt with my brothers. They were ignorant, arrogant, and racist. Now, do i have respect for policemen? Absolutely. They mean a great deal because they do save lives. They do solve crimes. They are invaluable. But those are the good cops. And good cops are quite hard to find because most of them allow themselves to suffocate in their own ignorance of society. Rather than becoming knowledgeable, they become "superior" because like i said before, they think they've "seen it all". Those cops... Well, they can go to hell for all i care. But the good cops, they have my utmost respect.

Firefighters... i have deep respect for what they do. They sometimes have to choose who to save and who to leave behind. They don't always win. It's a hard job. Much harder than being a cop. It requires sacrifice and endurance. And in the end, i'd rather be a policeman. Because you can't place me in a situation of whose lives i should save, and whose lives i should leave behind. Call me a coward. I don't care. We're all cowards underneath it all anyways when it comes to a particular thing.

So... they both save lives. They're both to be respected.
But i mean, if you've been proven right more than you've been proven wrong, it's natural to assume a position.

I don't know man...

I don't know why everyone got so touchy in their answers... kind of stupid when you think about it.

But really... if you do hold a grudge of some sort against cops, hold it against those that did you wrong. Not those that haven't had the chance to do you right.

How about both. i work in both professions, as a full time police officer and a volunteer firefighter in the same town. i have saved lives and helped many people in both jobs. my preference, i don't have one.i love both jobs. its good to know that when you go to work or get called your gonna be helping someone who needs you. and thats the reason we get called, because someone needs us. the jobs have different requirements, but ultimately the same goal is achieved, that is to help and protect those in need.many times i have been required to act as a firefighter while in police uniform, and vice versa. i do my job the best i know how to help those in need, no matter what uniform i may be wearing at the time.

You sadly don't understand how importatant police are for your safety. Police officers seldom kill anyone and do so to save the lives of others or to stop a very dangerous person.

yes at times an accident can happen, or someone who is not dangerouis can appear dangerous, they have a split second to make a judgement call. And they get hours of training to make that right call.

Officers risk thier lifes daily to try and keep peace and to arrest people who are risks to the rest of us.

I think you need to work as a secuirty guard somewhere for a few weeks and you will have a totally different idea

I wouldn't choose either job.... but I do thank God that there are people out there who choose to do these very dangerous jobs. And policemen don't take people's lives away... they run into people who are on their way out of this world, that's all. People choose to live a criminal life, and the police are hired to put a stop to them.

That's not a fair question, I think policemen are life savers too. Maybe you've had a bad experience but for the most part, we need our police officers.

Most police officers have never even drawn their weapon let alone fired.

Both occupations are revered by the public.

That is a very unfair question. Firefighters do not always get to the fire on time. They loose people too. Police officers just dont kill people.

I think there may be more long range social benefit to taking away lives - special emphasis on violent offender and similar misfits - than for fires. Both are actually nature's way of clearing away decay.
