Some of our funnest vacations have been tent camping. In California we had some nice campgrounds right on the ocean and we would take our 3 youngest kids and let them each invite a friend and we all had a blast. We went swimming, hiking, biking, hide and seek, kite flying, fishing, boogie boarding, shell collecting, campfire tales and smores, horse back riding and trips to the Monterey Bay aquarium or Hearst Castle.

Cruises can be relatively inexpensive if you don't have to fly to get to the port. You can get kids rates in the 300 dollar range for the week if you shop around.

Renting a motorhome is really fun. It might be cheaper than a hotel room and if you don't go too far the gas should not be too bad. With the motorhome you can dry camp in the wilderness or find an inexpensive campground near a lake or a river.

We rented a motorhome about 3 times and took it all the way to Canada with the kids and found all sort of cool campgrounds along the way. We liked it so much we finally bought a motorhome. Our kids are all grown now so just the two of us take it out.

Best places....cheapest vacations don't tend to go hand in hand. Besides depends on your definition of cheap.
