Food and Water.
Also, look around in the Baby Department for something cool to make it a little sweater for winter, or get a cool looking sock and make a sweater.

Breed Information:
This breed is clannish, recognizing and preferring his own kind. As a rule, he does not like dogs of other breeds. Legend and history are rich in tales of the ancestors of the present Chihuahua. He is described as a popular pet, as well as a religious necessity, among the ancient Toltec tribes and later among the Aztecs. Archaeologists have discovered remains of this breed in human graves in Mexico and in parts of the United States.

The modern Chihuahua is quite different from his early ancestors, with his variegated colors ranging from snow white to jet black. Mexico favors the jet black with tan markings, and the black and white spotted. The United States prefers the solid colors.

So you want to own a Chihuahua?

The Chihuahua's size makes it a wonderful dog for people who live in small city apartments.

The breed is very hardy and adaptable, but it must live inside a home or an apartment, the Chihuahua should not live outside.

Chihuahuas are good travelers and can easily go anywhere with their owners.

Careful attention. I have a cross but took care of a full bred and she just needed to be watched because chihuahua's do have a smaller and more fragile frame than most dogs. and they have small bladders so make sure you take them out often. I saw that one of the other answers said you need a sweater for them and tha's not true in all cases. If you live someplace that it does get really cold then yes you do need something extra but I live in Cali and even though it does get chilly, my chihuahua hates wearing a sweater. If you have a short hair chihuahua then you have to worry about the cold factor more thn if you have a long hair.

-they have a rep of getting very dry skin..also certain chi's are synsative to certain food or treat coloring-like my 12 y/o chi gets an allergic reaction to red coloring in her treats and food so we had change her food and treats.
-they can get aggressive too so make sure that you don't get one if they're more than 1 year in age and you also have a young child in the household..
-my 1 y/o chi has a problem with his hips if we touch them...so have a vet on hand if this happens and gets worse as it could be a sign of hip displasia that is common in chi's and rotties.
when you get your chi, be sure to observe the way they walk, run, sit and lay. if you spot something out of the ordinary like bulging knees or if the dog trips quite often, have a vet take a look...don't count on what the seller says(they're not always truthful)
-chihuahuas are very weather-synsitive. the can get too hot or too cold. be sure to have a good bed and PLENTY of water for you chihuahua during the summer.
-they almost always shake..this is very very common in chi's so don't be scared if the chi starts shaking and the weather isn't very cold...but if they're shaking very hard and it's cold out, be sure to let your chihuahua back in so it can get warmed back up.
-some chi's require a special diet or they can be prone to diabetes(somewhat common). so check with your vet for YOUR dog's diet requirements!

Sweaters in winter.Keep food available at all times, especially for puppies,as Chihuahuas are prone to low blood sugar(hypoglycemia).Keep some Karo syrup on hand if this happens. If the dog 's blood sugar is low,it will act very sleepy, dizzy and uncoordinated, and may have a seizure. If that happens, rub some Karo on it's gums and get it to a vet, pronto! Also don't let them jump down from high places;don't let small children handle them, and get their teeth cleaned regularly,as they are prone to tooth problems.
