I rescued a male 30lb beagle-daschund mix about 3 months ago. I notice alot of people trim their dog's toenails. Is this really necessary? After all if the dog lived in the wild like its ancestors it obviously would not have a human clipping its toenails. Why do people clip dog's toenails?

Most pet dogs don't run enough on hard surfaces to naturally wear their toe nails down. yes, you need to get your dogs nails clipped. If the quicks grow out it can hurt them as they get older as the toe will not be making proper connection with the ground and will start growing sideways.
Make an appointment with just a vet tech or someone at the vet to get your dogs nails clipped so they can show you the right way to do it. It's easy!

If a dog walks a lot on a concrete or other rough surface, it may not be necessary to clip his nails as often -- if at all. But since my dogs have always been indoor animals, I have had to trim their nails.

The problem with long nails is that they can get caught in carpeting, clothing, or other surfaces and be torn out. That usually requires a vet bill for antibiotics and/or stitches. Trimming the dog's nails prevents that problem, as well as keeping him from clawing himself, someone else, or some other surface.

Between vet bills and having a wood floor resanded, a ten dollar pair of clippers and the few minutes that it takes to trim the dog's nails are definitely worth it.

And thanks for rescuing a homeless pet in need of a good owner. That was a great thing to do!

People clip their dogs nails because if they didn't they would eventually curl right under and the poor dog would walk like a cripple. Or the nails would get broken off, painfully, and bleed a tremendous amount. And obviously dogs are no longer wild, they have been domesticated. Wild dogs also didn't get fed by people, go to vets, walk on leashes, sleep in houses or do anything else companion dogs now do. Yes, it is necessary to clip your dog's nails!

i have a dog myself, a soft-coated Wheaten Terrior. We clip his toenails because they can become too long and scratch us along with other people accidently. It is not necessary to the dog's health, but if you have tile floors your beagle may slip because it is hard for them to gain traction. It is also more sanitary to clip them, that way when they are outside, dirt and bacteria doesn't rest in the underside of his toenails. It doesn't cost much to get it done, you can even do it yourself. Usually dog broomers will do it for about $5-$10. If you decide to do it yourself, make sure you find where his vein ends so you don't hurt him-and get a professional dog trimmer!! Good Luck!

Long nails can get split or caught in carpeting, blankets, etc. Also, shorter nails prevent the toes from spreading out. This reduces strain on the leg joints when the dog walks.

Unless your dog regularly exercises on concrete or pavement he should have his nails trimmed. Even if he exercises on concrete, if he has dew claws they will still need trimmed, otherwise they may start to curl which would be very painful.

If the dog runs alot on concrete or a rough surface, as it is abrasive contact, but dogs get their toe nails trimed as to not let the vein in the nail grow to long, and over time it is hurt-ful to the dog when he walks and he has his toe nails digging back into his foot(skin). Some people are obsessive about it, but only you know your dog, so you make the call...

Yes, it is necessary

If you keep your Dog inside, then you need to, because a to-long toenails will hurt them if they walk on a hard surface like concrete, tile, marble, etc. so their nails must be clipped, but if they stay outside and walk on a soft surface like sand, dirt, etc. nail clipping only to keep their nail clean...

hope this help

They use to run and hunt for food too. While alot of running naturally wears the nails down, most dogs don't get enough exercise to keep them short. Long nails will hinder them if not clipped. By the way KUDOS to you for saving a life. Way to go.

I had a dog that used to bite on her toenails all the time, and pull at them. Her teeth would rake against it and it drove me crazy. My vet seemed to think it was just a phase she went through because of boredom. We lived in a small apartment at the time. When we moved into our house and she had a yard to play in, she stopped. I would recommend the same thing that parents use for children who bite their nails, that nail polish that makes it taste bad. We used it for our dog and it kept her chewing on them for a couple of days. We were not very diligent at it, but I think if you use it consistently, it would break the habit.
