You can usually tell by knowing their last names.

In general Chinese names are one syllable names like Cho, Hong, and Wu.

In general Japanese names contain more than one syllable, like, Takashima, Hiyashi, and Toyota.

i distinguish chinese & japanese by looking their eyes.

japanese has smaller and thinner eyes than chinese. their eyes looks like it is very inside.

if i know the name then can also know which one they belong. like chinese names got Tan, Zheng, Yang, Yue, Yu, Mao etc...

japs are like this Saki, moto, kata, shima behind each name.

i'm vietnamese, chinese, and a little french but i can't tell what other asians are unless i find out their last names or i'll just ask. people tell me i'm something else all the time.

Just asked them if its that important to you. They will be glad to tell you. Otherwise they will be pissed if you make a judgement call and they are not of the race you guessed.

japanese, sharper eyes, chinese rounder face.
there are slight differences that make it easy.
its all an asian secret though, but i'm sure if you go to japan and then china you can figure it out.
