In a restaurant the batter is different but cooking them at home I think people use the same batter so yes the only diff is the shape

Shape and how they are made. Ingredients are different too when made from scratch. You add oil into the batter for waffles. I would think this would help them from sticking to the waffle iron.

Besides shape, the texture is different. I like my waffle batter with a little more sugar than my pancake batter because it gets browner and crispier.
