I am 38 weeks pregnant. My last appointment was last wednesday and I was 1cm dilated, 90%effaced, soft and up-close. My baby has dropped and is ready in position as well. I have an appointment tomorrow and I was wondering if I am dilated more will they send me to the hospital? I have heard that when some women go to the doc. they find out they have dilated a whole lot more they will go straight to the hospital for labor. Why is that, even if they havent naturally gone into labor? and what will they make you do when you go to the hospital? will they induce? thanks! I am new to all of this and just wondering some experiences.
oh yeah, I have been having sex and walking to help out..I also have like a ton of the braxton hicks everyday, so hopefully it will be more.

If you are dilating technically you are in the early stages of labor. The braxton hicks contractions are your cervix dialating.
If you are admitted to the hospital that means you are going to be a mommy real soon.
I started dilating a few days before I lost my mucous plug. I was admitted to the hospital 2 days after that. They take real good care of you. If you are going to have an epidural they will do that as a first step. It is a little uncomfortable at first, but you will be so glad you did it.
They will hook you up to a contraction monitor to see how far apart they are. And I believe a fetal heartbeat monitor as well.
My water never broke and I was put on pitocin to increase labor. They broke my water (which was painless b/c of the anesthesia)and I had a baby boy 6 hrs. later. Every labor and delivery is different.
And walking is the best thing to help labor along. I don't know about sex since you are dilating. I would talk to your dr. about that. I could be wrong.

they send you to the hospital because you can't tell, some women's labor progressed very quickly while other's not so much, they want to make sure you and your baby are safe. no do not induce labor unless you stop progressing with your labor, at at 38 weeks they wouldn't induce you unless your water broke but you didn't go into labor, that's what happened to me, i had my daughter 6 weeks earlier, my water broke while i was at home, my doc told me to go to the hospital and 12 hours later when labor hadn't started they induced me. they will get you into a room, they will probably set you up to have your babies heart beat checked.
to the above post i live in ny as well, they will also admit you if your water has broke, even if you aren't in active labor because they have to make sure you progress as it is unsafe to not have your baby within 24 hours after your water breaks.

If you are only 38 weeks, they will not induce labor unless it is medically necessary. The doctor will check you and let you know how things are progressing. I cannot see them putting you into the hospital if you aren't in labor and your pregnancy is normal. Sorry.

In NY they don't admit you unless you are in labor (they check if you are dialated and then again in two howrs to c if it's ongoing; measure the strengh of contractions and so on).
The reason many women are sent to hospital from dr's office is just that once you're that far along dr wants to c u more often.

If a woman isn't in labour I'm sure that they will get her settled into a room until she goes into labour and that's when they will take her down into the birthing room. That's what's done in my area.

So this could mean that she could be in the hospital for 2 - 3 weeks.
