You need to get the point straight, the women muslim dress has not been criticise, it's just the using of the veil.
In may have been tolerated all along, but times have changed. There are some fanatics out there that give muslims a bad name. People feel threatened because they don't know what is hiding behind that veil. If is was not covering the whole body and can see the facial features like using a voil fabric, people can accept that.
I don't think that the kilt is a good example. On the other hand, you could use hoodies because it is always associated with crime.
You need to look at what is the factor behind the discussion.

from another muslims prospective i personally think their is nothing wrong with wearing the hijab it clearly says in the quran tht u should cover ur hear however no were in the quran does it say u must cover ur face, wht muslims (yes muslims) fail to remember is tht islam is a VERY flexiblle religon we dont need to go to extremes we are even allowed to wear sleves up o the elbow and some argue a little higher than the elbow so long as ur not sleevless. I feel uncomftorble when i see a women walking down the street with the full niqab on because it just freaks me out it really does and im a muslim so imagine how the non-muslims see it. When im talking to someone i like to see their face it just makes it tht much easier. wht i dont understand is if we dont have to wear the niqab why wear it and make life so much harder fo ourselfs when we could just not wear stop the fighting and carry on following our religon at the same time?

It,s because of fear that muslim dress is criticized, not because of the dress itself.Lets face it the western world is now very parniod about anything thats muslim. When muslims can live in the west and go around with the face and body 98% covered , that makes non muslims very uncertain because of today s present situation. Did you have problems with the muslim dress before Sept 11 ? Not that i could see. I think to show solidarity decent honest muslims should not cover themselves in public places, i know it,s your culture and religion, nothing wrong with that. But we must all change are way of living at this time. Praise to God it will all end., and we can all get back to a non-paraniod life style.

If it was just criticism, then I don't think I'd care. If they tried to impose a dress code on me through violence (as the Muslim dress code for women is forced on Muslim women who wish to be different), then I'd have to take exception to that.
I think the Muslim's insistance upon the burka for their women says is that Muslim men have very poor impulse control. After all, isn't the reasoning behind the burka that the sight of female skin will cause Muslim men to behave poorly?

Criticism is wrong. If someone startts wantonly criticising my clothes i probably would be interested in what they have to say but I would not attack them verbally or physically.
However if my clothes started to make people frightened in any way, I should like wo address the problem in a mature way. I would not assume that everyone is wrong in not understanding why I dress the way I do.
Its not good to impose fright on other people in the name or culture or religion if you live in their coulntry. As a foreigner myself in Britain I go to church along with 7% of the UK population. When I meet English people I do not intimidate them with my religion. I calmly explain myself to them about the God I worship. They ask question, sometimes aggressively sometimes phylosophically sometimes in an insulting way, but the do not feel frightened by what I am saying, just by my skin colour which they see as too dark to be normal.

I wish you be a fly in the taxi I get up to the hospital and hear what Muslim taxi drivers say about British women who are not Muslim.
I can tell you a lot of the time it is not flattering. I don't even understand why they feel the need to discuss it with me but they tend to.
Most of the taxi firms in Halifax have Muslim taxi drivers. Just in case you were going to suggest using another taxi company.
I don't have a problem with what Muslims wear and if I went to a Muslim country I would cover up. Last time I looked I live in England so let me wear what I want as well please.
The lady who got sent home from work wearing a cross has also happened this week. How much coverage has that got in the yahoo answers page?

Can i give the straight answer, without causing offense, to let you know how british people feel?
When they see islamic dress, it looks a bit sinister, and shady to cover one's identity, a bit like the "fear" brought about by hoody gangs, masking thier faces with hoods, and scarves.
Also it makes the person aware, the person is muslim, and that religion, is openly, in its texts, dominating, intolerant, and aggressive, especially to people who will not conform to it.
Historically, many nations, have fought against the muslim faith, such as the knights, with the crusades, in british history, so there isnt a history of love between our faiths?
Also, muslims are seen like the nazis, who intended to take over the world, and make everone else nazi's. That was not stood for, and many muslims, have publicly said this is the muslim aim, and it is there, in many muslim texts.
If a religion "sees" those who dont believe, as infidels, (worse than animals) then how do you expext us to see you? and the islamic dress, is representative of all this.
Perhaps modern, or "moderate" islam, needs to separate its self, and get a new image?

One should be able to dress the way we choose, this is freedom, when you stop one making choices as small as this you are taking the freedom away.
Lets look Back into History, for example Isareal and Palastine, 100 years ago or more this was ruled by the ottoman empire who were muslims if you didn`t know. Under the Ottoman empire or any Islamic State as far as I have read, Lived Muslims, Jews, Christians and all other religions. They were allowed to practice their faiths and dress the way their religion allowed them too. What is more Jews, Christians were protected by these states from any harm and lived in peace.
When the west has come into power, they have said this is not right tahts not right you cannot do that because it does not fit into their way of lives, that is not right and try to impose ones way of life onto everyone else, result - War and hatred for the west, as it comes as no suprise, as hundreds of westeners including me think why to they hate us so much, go and look at history and it speaks for itself.
Why women in Islam have to wear the Hijab, to cover from up from a male man. A male according to research thinks about sex 7 second, probabaly fiction but the point is sex is on our minds. You see a Beautiful woman and you say wow look at her, it happens and is a natural instinct.
Lets look at stats, in muslim countries were the dress code is strict and women have to cover up, the rape cases are very low, compared to America where they are extremely high, a woman gets raped every 2 mins or something not 100% sure, so there are many reasons beind something.
If you don`t understand it, go and research it then put your points and concerns forward , if you are too lazy to do that, then don`t mock what you do not understand.

Good God woman your argument is totally flawed you silly individual - Scottish men do not spend their whole lives wearing kilts whilst living in Saudi Arabia - Iraq - Iran etc etc. Scotland is part of the British Nation I do not think any of these countries are. So tell me why Muslim women wear the Veil and live in isolated communities without trying in the slightest to integrate. it is actually basic manners - you do not interact with people who have their faces covered - generally speaking they are presenting barriers to good interaction. Oh and by the way Muslim men and women criticise the way we dress in our own country - apparently white women are all whores!! Go away until you have a sensible question about integrating societies

Not really. Most criticise the way I dress anyway. I say it's up to you. If you want to cover yourself fully fair enough. If you want to walk around naked I don't care that much....I'm too busy thinking about what type of skateboard I'm going to buy to worry about other peoples religion or dress sense.
