Because they felt that their dad loved Joseph more. When he received the rob of many colors this in their eyes conformed this.
Later they sold him into slavery. Note that Joseph spent many years as a slave and even more in Prison for being wrongly accused. BUT later became King. So all along Joseph did have a special assignment for his life. He continued to Love the Lord and worship Him and was later rewarded for this. Which shows that even when we feel like God has left our side, He is still there. He does things in His timing, not ours.

Because that was the only emotion siblings had towards one another all through the Old Testament. It's just like how all the women in the Old Testament are whores, and how most of the patriarchs are drunks. The writers kept falling back on convenient plot devices.

His father had a few wives, Joseph's mother only had him. Then she died. He was the reminder to his father of her, therefore his father liked him better. He was treated nicer, and his brothers were bitter because of it.
