Most surnames that are also common nouns or verbs get snickers. I suffered through "Pack Rat" all the way through grade school and high school.
If anyone had snickered at Judge Roy Bean, the "only law west of the Pecos", he would have given them a new belly button - .45 caliber, made of lead. I didn't have that option.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp
is the 1880 US Census. It onl shows 200 people at a time. It has a goodly number of people named Bean.
I think it is a mildly funny surname. It doesn't sound normal. I would not laugh if I saw it.
The US Census
http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/namesearch.pl
says it is 713th in popularity in the USA. Smith is 1st, Johnson 2nd, Pack 1,678th or so.

No, I don't think I'ts that funny. My ex-married name was pickle. Funny to me when salesmen or even the doc. office would ask" how do you spell that?" There are alot more common names such as smith or johnson but do not think bean is ab-normal. And no , I would not laugh if I saw it. Well wait a minute......I would giggle a little if your first name was billy or bobby. But then you could just marry a betty or barbara and it would'nt seem so bad. Or join the navy.

When i first heard it, i thought it was funny. But then i heard it from the 'Mr. Bean Show' which is a comedy show...I would think it is funny and probably make a comment about it to the person that had that last name.

Mr. Bean, Rowan Atkinson, thought it was funny--he created a comic character with that nam, who sometimes makes me laugh.
On the other hand, I really, really like Sean Bean, the British actor, and he doesn't make me laugh at all.
Just hearing the name without context, yes, it is a funny name.
But put it in context, and it depends on who the name is attached to.

It's not that bad of a name. It's not a normal last name but it isn't a funny one either. The first time I laughed at a last name is when I was told their last name was Pigg.

I happen to know a family named Bean. I also know families named Straw, Korn, Dumm, Waltz, Barley, and I once met a woman whose last name was Outhouse.
