if they are that impacted she needs to go to a vet. You attempting to clear them could tear, and or create a infection. You could check with a local groomer, many of them will express them, but if she is in pain or such better to take her to the vet. She may have something more wrong.

If they are at the stage where she's in a lot of pain, DO NOT do anything to them. As others have pointed out, you could do more damage than good.
Also, give your vet a call, even though they aren't open today. Chances are that they will either have an answering service or an answering machine that gives you a number to call in case of emergency.
Or, if there's an emergency vet clinic in your area, call them and take her in. If you live in a university or college town, the Vet Med department sometimes has an after-hours emergency clinic.
You will probably pay a premium price in most cases if you use an emergency vet service or your vet has to make a special trip into the office. But if your dog is in a lot of pain, I think the money will be well spent.
Abcessed anal glands, like any other abcess or infection, aren't something that you want to let go until it becomes a major health issue AND a major cost to you.

I would be taking the dog to a different vet for a second opinion. I have noticed dogs on solely dry food diets or tinned food are more prone to gland infection. I would be adding a dash of olive oil daily to his food & also an egg & a can of sardines once a week. Also regular exercise helps prevent them from getting infected also imho. Keep their behinds well trimmed & regularly express the glands when you give the dog it's fortnightly bath also. But that's all more about prevention & atm you need a cure so find a new vet asap would be my advise to you. Then once he's better start with incorporating my suggestions in your normal doggy routine to try & stop a reinfection. As once they have had infected anal glands they can tend to have the infection reoccur frequently I've noticed this in some of the rescue dogs I've dealt with in the past.

If her glands are impacted, then you do NOT want to express them yourself! You could cause much more damage by causing them to "explode" for lack of a better word.
Call your vets office and listen to their recording, they should have an emergency contact number on there for you to call. If not, then locate a 24 hour emergency clinic in your area.
You need to get her treated ASAP to prevent any further complications, this can be a very serious and costly problem if you let it go.
Good luck!

What sort of discharge are you talking about? You should just apply a warm cloth to the area. If you continue to try and express them one or both of them may rupture and that will cause more pain. Get your dog to the vet when they open and get your dog some relief

FULL anal sacs are uncomfortable, but NOT painful. A good groomer can take care of this for you.
IMPACTED anal sacs (blocked ducts) are more uncomfortable, but again....usually not very 'painful'....unless they are allowed to progress to an....
Anal Sac ABSCESS (infection).....which is VERY PAINFUL. Any attempts you make to squeeze them out once it reaches this situation will only cause more harm than good. (And trying to squeeze out impacted/blocked anal sacs is a common cause of abscessation.) Not even an experienced groomer should attempt it at this point. It is now a medical procedure.
It's not a true 'emergency' (her life is not in danger), so it can wait until morning. In the meantime, you can try warm, moist compresses (be gentle!!!...it hurts, and she therefore might bite) to help draw any infection out. If it is indeed an abscess/infection, they'll start her on antibiotics, antiinflammatories, and something for the pain. They'll also likely have to sedate her to clean it all out, so make sure she has no access to food after 8pm, and no water after about 6am. That way, if they DO have to sedate her (don't worry...it's minor surgery), she'll already be ready. If they don't have to sedate her, you can feed her breakfast after the visit.
If she's in so much pain that you just don't want to wait, however, look in the phone book for the nearest 24-hour animal emergency clinic if your own DVM doesn't provide after-hours service.

Try a warm compress. This should help and also relieve his pain. If the problem continues go to your vet, there is surgery available to remove the glands. Good luck!

hopefully you are adult ! if your dog is in pain from "any thing" she will not be in a good mood, imagine if you had her problem,,ouch'' i was just onYA the othr day answering another question and i mentioned inpacted a-glands,gross but important health issue first if she will lay long enough for you to apply warm rag thats been moistened with warm water (if you have EPSOM SALTS on hand (NOT regular salts),you could add some of this to the water,it,s very good for sprains sore mussles etc.for people and pets, any way if you can do this for about 10-20 minutes, she soundslike shes in pain, lift her tail, on both sides of ****** theres 2 glands about 1-2 inchs in you will put your hand in a cup posistion kinda with thumb and forfinger firmly but gently applie pressure as if you were milking the tract(best way i can explain) the stuff thats going to come out is going to smell worse then what she eliminates! pe eww have rag /papertowels near by.she may not tolerate this, i always check all my dogs when i bath them, easy er,i have to tell you if you can,t do this completely you,ll need to take her to the vet, some times if the dog has had this for along time they,ll have to do surgery procedure..good luck

It can happen quite often. It's just that the tubes for the anal glands are so small and it clogs them up. s/he's probably seriously constipated too. I'd suggest visiting an emergency clinic to have it removed.

Surgical gloves, Panalog, Stick your finger in about an inch to 1/12 inch. Move you finger like(The come here gesture) and some of the build up will come out. Even though the vet has shown me ,I've never been able to completely clear them ,but it buys some time to get to the vet. Repeat for glands on either side.
