I sing professionally, and you have to have a love of music to 1) be good, 2) make others want to hear you, and 3) endure the rigorous music schedule.

I was faced with similar options when I was in high school. I have done some singing professionally, but I don't have enough training to have made a career out of it.

If I had to do it all over again, and I had some skill in science (as it seems you do), I would choose a school with a strong music department and a strong science department (whatever your choice, bio, chem, physics, etc). Then I would pursue a double major. That will give you maximum choices.

Sheryl Crow was a certified public elementary school teacher when she got her break with Tuesday Night Music Club. I have to tell you, it's good to be able to pay the bills! Some musicians find the anguish of poverty creatively stimulating, but I never did. My professional musician friends have spent decades having difficulty making ends meet, supporting families when they came along. It's a tough life in the USA. (If you're in Europe it might be different)

But whatever you do, don't abandon your music. And you shouldn't have to. Just remember that you're going to have to support yourself. Good luck.
