I've had them for years and they never did anything and then today i saw them going at it today. At the next thing i know she laid an egg today. I wasn't planning on this. How many eggs should i be expecting and what do i need to do for them. I don't even have a breeding box or nest or anything.

As soon as possible buy a nest and some nesting material. You can also buy a box for more space. Put the nesting material in one corner of the box and let her lay the nesting material as she wants it. Usually females lay about 9 to 8 eggs. She will be laying every other day so they won't come out all at once. You can buy a parakeet book that will give you more information. Do not touch the egg incase your parakeet does not take care of it as it hatches. They would think it's another bird's egg by the smell.

If you don't have a breeding box, chances are that the egg is infertile. But, to be on the safe side, you need to get a breeding box. You could even make one, but buying it is just easier. Use your search engine to find out how to maintain a nesting box for your type of bird. If you don't want your birds to breed, then remove the egg from the cage and put it in a shoebox with a heating pad and some bedding, just in case it is fertilized. Keep doing this with all of the eggs, and eventually they will stop breeding. For more info, use a site that explains more...I am to lazy to find one for you right now, but im sure somone will answer with a link.:) good luck.

Get a nest box put some pine shavings in it and put the egg in it. Touching it wont make the Parakeet abandon it. I breed cockatiels and every egg they lay I pick up out of the box and mark it with a marker so I know when it should hatch.

If you take the egg away, she will lay another one. If you keep taking them away, she will keep on laying. A parakeet can exhaust herself to death this way. At least let her keep it for a little while.

get a small cloth and grap the egg. hold it up to a light, if u see black stuff throw it in a bin( because it has rotted) or if you see little veins put it back and it should hatch a few weeks later
