My neice is almost three and whenever I'm at my brothers house, she is "humping" the arm of the couch, he is asking me why, my daughter never did this at that age, and he and his wife are afraid to ask the doctor simply because of the embarassment, so I told him I would post the question and see if this has happened to anyone else, he says she only does it when she is trying to go to sleep. So if you have any idea or experience about this, it would be appreciated. Thanks.

I had 2 little girls in my home for a bit and one of them did the same thing in bed while trying to fall asleep.

Just natural I guess...some adults twitch their foot in bed to rock themselves to sleep, a child is trying to do the same thing. Plus it could be considered them trying to fight the on coming sleep, trying to do anything to stay awake.

Might even be her seeing the parents during the act of sex and she is repeating what she has seen.

Nothing a doctor needs to see or know....just might want to close the bedroom door more often and maybe wear her out more before bed time.

Let your brother know this isn't anything for them to be embarrassed about. Alot of kids do this some do it right up to school age. Tell them to ask the doctor what is best way to help her understand that she needs to stop. They really don't want her to keep doing this. I learned this past year that school counselors and child services will think she is being abused. There was a little girl that went to school with my daughter and she would play with herself. The school called her mother and told her what she was doing and accused her of child abuse. My sister used to work for the court system, when there was a child that the court considered to young to be on the stand in court she would have to speak for them in court. She was the child's voice in other words. I told her about the little girl and what the school told her mother and as soon as I told her what the girl was doing she said the girl was being abused. So it would be a good idea if they spoke to the doctor to find a way to help her stop.

I have two girls and although mine never did that, it's not uncommon for little girls to do that. Of course, she does it cuz it feels good!

Still, though, a fascination with sexual anatomy and/or acts can also be an indicator of sexual abuse! Personally, I would take the baby to the doctor's and have her vagina inspected just to make sure that nothing strange has been going on down there.

I know it sounds weird and extreme but my last two doctor's offices do it as a matter of course for the school physical.

I would tell her that she needs to only do that in the privacy of her bedroom.

Hopefully she'll grow out of it... or discover her hand...lol!

A lot of children this age use masturbation as a calm down method to help them go to sleep. When I taught 3 and 4 year olds...it was quite a site some days during nap..lol Just try not to get angry and let her know this is something we do in private...no in front of everyone.

She does it because it feels good and probably relaxes her. Lots of kids do that to soothe themselves. Her parents should tell her it's okay but she should only do it in her bedroom. If she starts that in the livingroom again they should send her to her room.

It's normal and she shouldn't be made to feel shameful about it. I'm sure their pediatrician has encountered it before so they should ask casually about it at the next visit.

ok, i dunno why she might be doing this but i agree with some of your other answers, she might be doing it as a way to sleep cuz when my godsister used to live with us she would do the same while she was laying down for bedtime... she would 'hump' her little stuffed animal we used to lay her with...but she was even younger... she was one year old. yes, i admit its weird but its pretty natural i guess.... human nature if you ask me. in your neice's case, she is old enough to understand a little bit more when you talk to her. just tell her that thats not nice to do, especially infront of people... just try to help her find a healthier way to fall asleep... good luck...
