Don't cars just sell themselves, basically?

The salespeople do sell the car. They know lots of the little features about the cars that you might not know, and you won't find on the internet. By them explaining it to you, then you can get the most of your car and features. Plus, they help you arrange financing, negotiate prices, compare features of similar models, and then you also have someone to come back to after the sale if you need something or have a problem. They are there for a reason, to help you buy the car that best fits your needs. If there was no need for salespeople, there wouldn't be any left by now. Just find a good salesperson, there's plenty of them out there, have some fun with the process, and your salesperson. Its really not all that bad dealing with a good salesperson...

unfortunately you do need a sales person if buying from the car lot. However...salespersons are hungry and this is to your advantage. Select the car you want...if it's a used car it gets even better. go to www.kelleybluebook.com look up the car and get the price from there...you have to enter information about the car...what they say the car is worth you offer...it's up to you if you pay more but that's how I do it. If you are looking at a new car...go to the site and in the mileage area enter and arbitrary # such as 1000 miles...and see what it says...it will be less than the sticker price...sometimes considerably less...use this tool when buying...as I said...salesmen are hungry...also..don't go to just one dealer...if you are not in a hurry shop around and use this technique...it does work.

Also try purchasing a current model year car that is a program car. They normally have some miles on them..but not a lot of miles...less than 20k.

Another thing to try is checking the rental companies...they sell cars which carry the full warranty and are well maintained...and again carry the full warranty.

Hope this helps

No, you don't need them. Most people are looking to buy a particular TYPE of vehicle, like a minivan, econo car, pickup, or SUV, and not much else matters except maybe brand name, so the main job of the "salesperson" is to convince them that if they leave and shop elsewhere, they will be passing up the greatest opportunity ever offered to ANYONE on earth.

How many times have we heard the tired line: " this is a GREAT deal that is only good TODAY, folks"

His job is NOT to get you into the car that "best fits your needs" it is to sell you a car that you cannot afford at an interest rate too high, with features you don't need and shouldn't be paying for, like "underseal" or "fabric protection" or overpriced extended warranty.

I have never bought a new car, but when I buy a used car, I check the internet, sites like cars.com or specially www.autotrader.com and when I find one, I check the used car web pages to see the value.
I telephone ahead and I just talk to the internet manager, it is faster and you can get good cars there without losing your time.

no it is sad to say but sales people really do sell the cars.
they find what you would be happy with and convince this is the right car for you.
most people know little about cars or spending money.

Yes they do but you should do your homework before you go to the dealer and decide what make and model you want to buy and the salesman will just tell you what kind of deal he can give you and fill out the paper work.

No. People do not need a sales person. I always go straight through the fleet manager. It eliminates paying commision.
