Does anyone else feel we are being "sold out" with the contract AKC is forging with Petland?????????? Is this not what we are trying to STOP??????

They had made a contract with Petland so that the puppies sold from Petland would be registered by the pet store. That would insure that the new owners WOULD NOT use CKC or another registry. AKC claims that registrations are down, and therefore, so is revenue.

The breed clubs should NOT have to put a stop to it. Since the general membership is not privy to the actual contract, we will never know the actual details. That does not sit well. It is hard to continue to preach registration to puppy buyers when you are not as "pro" AKC as before.

I know it was defeated, and I know the there are BIGGER concerns with the AKC and different "special interests", but the point I guess is, when it gets to this point, how do we all sit here and condemn these idiots and extoll the virutes of AKC, if this is the direction it is heading and we are believing it less and less ourselves???????
This seemed to apply here more than anything else. Many of us laugh at the dumbos with their CKC registered crap, but the fact is....they just didn't buy it from the right pet store. Otherwise, it would be AKC, and I would be OK with all the pet store puppies being CKC registered.

Although I am no big fan of AKC these days, I don't understand how Petland employees assisting in the AKC application process of an eligible puppy is that big of a deal.
Why does this surprise anyone, they are mainly interested in $$$ and getting back all those registration $$$ they are missing out on.
Shouldn't we be much more concerned with AKC being in bed with HSUS??? Shouldn't we be more concerned with PAWS??? Shouldn't we be more concerned with their almost total lack of concern about all the anti-dog laws being passed? Shouldn't we be more concerned about AKC acting like a for profit business who does pretty much as they please instead of being "for the dogs"???
IMO the Petland debacle is the least of our problems with AKC these days.
AKC has been registering pet shop puppies since they opened, less, of course, in the last few years. My local petshop, just up the road, has plenty of AKC pups. The way I look at it is, if some idiot buys their pup from a pet shop, at least if it is AKC registered and they will receive some information and *maybe* they will learn some about their breed, and *maybe* they will learn enough to NOT go to a pet shop next time.
But really, if there were no pet shops, no commercial or BYB, WHERE would the pet buying public buy puppies? Show breeders? Show breeders will never breed enough to even come close to supplying buyers, especially with the attitude of it being good to only breed 1-2 litters a year. Of course, for every puppy a show breeder is not breeding, the commercial breeders have another sale. I think it is unbelievably stupid to rail against CBs/pet shops, and then not give them access to OUR puppies, by not breeding more and advertising where they can find us. Show breedings are only 5% of AKC registrations. I realize this is not a popular thing to say, but I say better a BYB that loves her dogs than a smuggled sickly puppy from some country that may not even have basic laws against abuse.

There is no contract between Petland and AKC...that has been rethought and recanted. Parent clubs, responsible breeders, rescues and even AKC board members sent letters and petitions to AKC to stop this and they listened.
I think people are totally missing the facts here..puppies from Petland weren't going ot just automaticly be registered with AKC..they were only going to be registered IF they were from an AKC registered litter(ANY puppies NOT from a litter already registered with AKC would NOT be getting AKC registration, they would be getting registration from the registry in which the litter was registered or not registered at all). What was going to happen was if the dog was registerable with AKC the store clerk was going to collect the fee and help register the puppy online before the person left, thereby insuring that an AKC registerable dog would be registered instead of having the papers just lost or never sent in.The big issue was the fact that they weren't going to be selling them on spay/neuter or limited registration. People need to get all the correct facts, not just partial or incorrect info.

Have no idea what you are talking about. I think that most of the dogs that come from petland and puppy mills are CKC registered, not AKC. Can you tell us more about what you are saying?

Same thing will happen next time as happened this time around. The National Breed Clubs will put a stop to it.
You see what the real deel here is that AKC got put in it's place, it is the National Clubs for each breed that have the power, not AKC.

The AKC rescinded their contract with Petland - mostly due to the huge negative response by the fancy, and for exactly the reasons you state. Now if we can only get them out of bed with the animal rights groups like HSUS supporting things like PAWS....

Haven't heard of that before, but if it's true, then it would be a complete crock of crap b/c I've seen the dogs that Petland sells. Haven't been even moderately impressed yet.
Where do I go to find info on this?

You seem like a very judgemental person. Why don't you worry about your own dogs and let others worry about theirs? What does this issue between AKC and Petland matter? People have the right to make their own choices concerning their dogs.
Oh, and if you don't mind, could you please tell me why you are assuming that I don't care for my dog? You don't even know me.
I saw my female Husky every single day and petted her every single day, and I couldn't tell she was really pregnant until a week before she gave birth.
