Can the X-ray show decay underneath gold inlay. Some dentists say yes and some say no. I have heard that they have to take the inlay out to see what is going on.

Depends on how much decay is present and how big the inlay is. Metal has a "white-out" effect on x-rays, meaning if the decay is smaller than the inlay, you really can't see it until it is bigger than the inlay. Hope this answers your question

The X-ray will not show decay under the gold inlay. I'm an RN and I had to have the gold inlay removed to properly assess the decay below and see if the nerve was involved. Good Luck.

It will really depend on the shape of your inlay.

Mickeymaz and Justine are correct. It depends on the size and shape of both the decay and the inlay.

I don't know. Do you vote for Justine because she gave more details in her answer or do you vote for Mickeymaz because she gives more details in her picture?
