Fear of the spread of communism globally led to a theory that if one country sucumbed to communism it's neighbors would follow (domino theory). To maintain the balance of power the US felt it was necessary to fight communism in Vietnam for fear that all of Southeast Asia would fall to communism. The process started very slowly with US advisors to South Vietnam (the non-Communist part of Vietnma), but this eventually led to full commitment of US troops in the region.

The reason was to try and prevent the spread of terrorism. The problem was that whenever US soldiers would gain territory, the asshole diplomats would just hand it right back over. Though it's an interesting tidbit that before his assassination, Kennedy had signed a bill that would pull all US troops out of Vietnam. After he was dead and Johnson took over, he reversed the bill, escalated the war and signed over contracts to friends of his who make millions selling the helicopters that were used in the war.

Eisenhower started sending advisors to Vietnam. Kennedy began sending troops. Johnson escalated the war and instated the draft. Nixon got the mess and ended it.

This was a time when the US military had little to do, and a decision was made to stop the spread of communism wherever possible. Your parents or grandparents might remember in the late 50's and early to mid 60's when everyone was worried about communism. There was almost a feeling of paranoia about it. So off to the crusades the military goes to fight for freedom, justice, and the American way! If I was a democrat, I could have just said Bush did it.
