It sometimes happens that a cat has only one. A friend of mine had only one kitten from her queen.

It does happen sometimes that a cat has one kitten but rarely. If the cat seems to be struggling a lot or moaning you should take it to the vet immediately because it may have been having trouble delivering the others. If the cat was really fat before she had the kitten then most likely there are more but if the cat was not that fat at all there is a good chance that was the only one. If another kitten shows up again also take the cat to the vet immediately. Since you said that it has been crying and breathing heavily I would take to the vet and get it checked out but it may be if that was her first kitten to have that she is stressed out from all the work.

Good luck with your cat and kitten!

Cats can delay labor for a while, but it sounds like she might be having trouble. I would take her to an emergency vet. Sometimes they can give her an injection of a hormone called pitocin (Oxytocin) to help her labor. Or, she may need to have a Caesarean-- most vet hospitals are equipped for this sort of surgery. If done soon enough, she can have live kittens by C-section! In fact, we did a C-section on a little cat and delivered one HUMONGOUS kitten that we named Caesar! We also spayed Mom at the same time, so no more kittens for her. Mom and baby went home the very next day !!

What I'm concerned about is "dystocia". This is a condition where her uterine muscles have become so tired from a long labor that they can't effectively contract and allow her to deliver. Only a vet can tell for sure, but it is a very serious condition.

Yes it's "normal" for a cat to have only one kitten. However, if she hasn't fully recovered after this length of time, it's much more likely she's having trouble delivering more kittens. A vet can tell just by manual palpation (feeling) if she has more kitties yet to come and can also resolve any question of whether or not she needs help.

This is a life-or-death situation for both the cat and the kittens not yet delivered, and for the kitty already born as well. Please call your vet. That's too long between deliveries if more kitties are present.

Definitely take her to an emergency animal hospital, immediately! If she is in distress, she likely has another kitten jammed inside her birth canal. That kitten is likely dead by now, but the vet may be able to save the mother, and perhaps any more kittens inside her. Have her spayed while she is there so she isn't having any more litters.

your cat sounds like she is having trouble passing another kitten. (or more) Your best bet is to take her IMMEDIATLY to the vets, and have her checked out !! The 'cord' could be wrapped around the kitten that is 'next in line', and preventing it, and / or the others from birthing. She needs to be seen NOW, especially if it's been since "early morning".

Poor baby. Keep her nice and warm, and if the vet is close by, phone and ask for instructions. Maybe she is still going to givebirth to more kittens. The vet will ne the best resource to ask, and bring her over there if they say so.

I was in this situation last year and contacted a vet. They said to give it 24 hours maximum, then see how the mom was. If she seemed in a bad way, then to take her in.
It is very unusual for there to be only one, however our mom only had the one.

No, she is not O.K. She may be in serious trouble
Take her to the vet. There may be more kittens on the way.

If she is a first time mom, it is not terribly unusual to have only one or two kittens.
