Hi! I have a three yr. old who has the same problem. Until recently, I was stumped at how to handle it besides giving her medicine for it everday. They say it happens when the child won't eat stuff with fiber- like fruits and veggies. Well, I went to Wal-Mart and asked at the pharmacy what I could give her. I bought some Benefiber. I give it to her once a day, half a teaspoon. It is a powder and disolves clear into whatever you put it in. It does the trick! As long as I don't forget to give it to her or she fails to eat or drink whatever I put it in, we are having no more constipation problems, and I don't have to worry because all I am giving her is more fiber.

I agree that you should try prune juice. If that doesn't work, go to the doctor. He may want to give you an Rx for Mirilax. It's a med that is often perscribed for children who have chronic constipation. I think apple juice can cause a lot of gas, so you might want to suggest cutting back on that; or not using it at all for a while. You should increase water intake too. I hope your nephew finds relief soon. It's got to be horrible to see him in pain. GOOD LUCK!

we had that same problem and it took us 3 years to figure out that our son was allergic to milk. It is very possible that your nepew could be having an allergic reaction to something. My suggestion would be to figure out if there is something that he is getting everyday and try to take it out of his diet for a week or two. We noticed a change in our son almost immediately. If that doesn't work my next suggestion would be the gastro-intestinal doc or an allergist. You should also talk to your pediatrician to see if they have any suggestions.

Try prune juice - kids dont always like the taste but its worth a try - often kids of this age go through a stage where they want to wee on the toilet but they dont want to poo in the toilet they want to do that in a nappie (diaper in the US) so they hold on and refuse to go until they end up constipated and then they end up affraid to go as it hurts - you could try getting over the counter supositories this will make him go - you could try going to the DR for any suggestions they may have as to how to make him go - I doubt there is anything wrong (there could be but it is a common thing)

Take him to the doc. He needs fruit to soften his BMs. Probably a lot of the problem is due to the potty training...he might have had a couple of bad experiences, and now he's too scared and with-holding his BMs, which all adds to the problem. Its probably more psychological than physical...

My first thought was to give him prune juice everyday, make sure he stays active, kids that sit around are more prone to getting constipated. Also try stool softners you can get them over the counter and they have no flavor
