A very good friend of mine goes to the gym the same as me. I have been going a few more years than him.
Today, My measurements are pretty much the same as the last few years. He, however has put on 4 stones in like 1 year.
We are the same height. I am 11 stone and he is about 14 stone. I dont know about him but I do eat the right things and all else, incase somone answers about lack of nutrition, etc.
I understand muscle building much better and even today still give him advice and support, yet I just aint getting as good results compared to him.
Are there any bodybuilders out there that could give me any advice of this situation? Could he be on something like Steroids? I dont want to blame it on drugs or anything but I look at all possibilities here. Could this just be genetics?
To end it I just want to say I am not on anything (drugs, etc).
Serious answers please, anyone welcome to comment.

It is very difficult to answer this question despite the fact that your question is pretty detailed. You know what dude, It is not all that bad staying the same shape. You are probably faster and more flexible than him. It is just a possibility. I believe the main areas are:-
* He has better genetics
* He lifts weights differently compared to you at the gym
* He eats differently compared to you
* He may be on steroids.
* You may have a much higher matabolism.
* You may do more walking and/or jogging than him (anything resulting losing calories).
You also mentioned his friend getting the same results as him. Maybe they follow a similar diet to each other? Maybe they workout very similar at the gym? Then again maybe they take other things also? They are all possibilities at the end of the day.
I am a wrestler. I am 5ft 7" and I am about 156lbs. Today, I focus more of conditioning aswell as nice weight training. I am also a pretty muscular man. What I am trying to say is that when I started going to the gym, it was to look like a freakin monster. It did get to the point when I didnt get any bigger but now I am glad because I would be a heck of a lot slower. I have been going to the gym for about 5 years now, and started to take up wrestling about a year ago properly. With this of course I changed my plans regarding my 'muscle training'.
My opinion is focus on conditioning aswell as the weight training you are currently doing. Consider doing stretches and warm ups before workouts because many people dont do this!!
For me, wrestling is a great sport, may be worth a look for you?
My last advice is that if you find them on Steroids then dont follow them because it aint worth it dude. You have to ask yourself if you want to get bigger? Take up jogging, add some more spice to your routine like the things I mentioned above.
I shall say it again dude. Steroids are not worth it. I have been down that road on CONSIDERING it. I have never took them and NEVER will. Remember, your insides comes first, not the outside!!
All the best!!!

There are too many possible variables here for anyone to give you a definitive answer to your question. Firstly, although you say you attend the same gym you say nothing about the regularity with which you both attend, neither do you say whether you are both training in the same fashion. If you both train the same amount, intensity and regime, it would be easier to pinpoint why there's a difference. Without that information, the answer could simply be that your friend's training regime is maximising his bodybuilding potential while your own is not. I see guys at the gym all the time who are sweating their guts out training but they have poorly designed programes. They're training includes too much cardio, they do mega sets of high repetition low weights (or worse, they use weights that are too heavy and consequently 'cheat' to lift, thus negating any possible benefits and risking injury) or they overtrain to the point that they are working the same body parts again without allowing their muscles time to repair and grow. And they wonder why they're staying lean....
Secondly, as someone already said, all newbies have phenomenal results in their first 9-12 months of serious training. They have optimum muscle gain and fat loss. But then their bodies plateau and it takes a lot of time and effort for even the smallest gains. I suspect that in another few years your friend will be moaning about the fact he gets only small payoffs for big efforts. Thirdly, genetics is everything. You can't turn a thoroughbred into a carthorse. You can make it the fittest, strongest thoroughbred in the world but nothing except chemical assistance is going to change it into a Shire. We can all only (naturally) achieve the best optimum bodies that our genetics allow. Fourthly, unless you're aiming at pro body-building competitions, you'd be an *** to consider steroids. The short-term gains aren't worth the long-term health risks.
Your best bet, imo, is to arrange a few one-on-one sessions with a personal trainer. Get them to look at your program. One downside of having trained as long as you have is that you tend to get stuck in a training 'rut' and your body is no longer being challenged by your training routine. Shake it up. Shock your body with a new routine. Your muscles will thank you for it ;>)

Dude, I am having the same problem exactly. My mate and me go to the gym, we do exactly the same things, eat the same, all of it, even having the same supplements, but he is bulked up quick as and I am still girly and weak. We been going for nearly two years and I haven't got anywhere, and he has advanced in leaps and bounds. I would say it may be lack of testosterone, or low levels of it, which is what was also suggested to me. I am hoping it is not though, and I don't think it is. Anyway good luck with it. Let me know how you go, if you get an answer that gets results, please tell me!

It could be genetics. Your testosterone levels may be different than his naturally or through his taking supplements. I assume that you are increasing weights and not repetitions. Stay off steroids and enjoy the healthy benefits of regular exercise. You don't really want to compete in muscle man competition do you? Carry 3 stones in your pocket and God Bless.

could be genetics,he could also be taking supplements or drugs. try this eat alot of protein, milk, eggs ,lean beef or venison if you can get your hands on it, beans, and peanut butter are excellent sources of protein.also increase the amount of potassium you eat (bananas) i don't know what your lifting it could be the workout is too easy for you now,try working with heavier weights. for example if you are benching (or whatever you call it) 150 lbs try 160lbs
if your family is wiry it will be a genetic issue.
just stay away from the drugs it is very harmful, steroids make your bones very brittle, give you mood swings, destroys your liver and so on. also try taking vitamins like centrum, that will fill in some of the vitamins that you may be missing

It's because your genetics.
There are two muscle types in our body's. one is slow twitched muscle they are tend to be long and big, another kind is fast twitched muscles, they are small. You may have more fast twitched muscles than slow ones. Do you run fast than him? When you lift weight, the same weight fast motion is easier than slow motion? If the answer is yes, you may have more fast twitched muscles.
I think since you have put 11 stones on you, it's already a lot. Your joint, your bone and your spine can support too much weight.
By the way when you lift weight, have you tried to lift very heavy weight for less rep? other then light weight more rep?
Good luck.

It is possible that he is on something or it could be that you are not eating enough.
You should be eating about 20% over your maintenance calorie level. These calories should be good calories @ 40% Proteins, 40% complex carbs and 20% good fats.
Hope this helps,

It is genetics, some people simply develop more muscle tissue. There is not much you can do about it. This is why some morons take steroids and incur health risks (including penis problems). Accept your self as you are and keep working out for your health.
