You made the first step towards your coping with this by typing in this question, well done!
Make follow up appointments with your doc or your therapist who prescribed the effexor. Take a meditation class or yoga or some such thing, they help immensely. Most of all, take time out for yourself, you deserve it.

Hi, I don't know how old the other people are who are answering but I am over thirty and suffer from depression. If you are not seeing a Psychologist than see one. It is important to get those issues out before they cause anxiety and depression. Now I see a Psychologist and I see a Psychiatrist. The second is a medical doctor and yes he does prescribe some medicine that I am on a low dose and it has helped me a lot. one of them suggested taking yoga. I have been told to do some creative activity for a half hour to an hour that will get out the feelings. Now I know you don't want to take a "happy pill" But neither did I and I have been taking it for over three years and it's changed my life. I don't plan on staying it on forever but It has helped and for most days it works fine. Now there is one site that talks about An herbal remedy and that might help you. Again I have heard of using physical exercises to relax and help with depression. Good luck I Hope you find the thing(s) that work for you! Good luck!!!

Maybe learn to play a musical instrument like the violin or saxophone or piano and join a band that does jazz or R&B or Reggie or whatever. Put an ad in the paper: "Pianist seeks percussionist and vocalist for band." Also you should maybe take voice lessons and learn to sing because many people feel their spirits uplifted and happy when they sing, it could help you out of depression. Good luck!

Small things that really do seem to help are: keeping hydrated, moderate excercise, Vitamin B, decent nutrition, talking to someone who knows how to listen.
Some people laugh at these and think I am not being serious, but really paying attention to these things has helped me quite a bit.

Have heart, Keep faith, Pray. Always look for the silver lining even when there doesnt appear to be one...and talk to the people you love and that love you, expecially when you dont want too.

Apart from taking medication you also have to go for therapy either at a local hospital or a private doctor. They both work hand in hand.

Physical exercise can lift your spirits. Your body creates endorphins when you exercise. Endorphins produce a "happy" feeling. Try taking walks or bike riding.
