Go to your local animal shelter and talk to the volunteers there and they can point you in the right direction.
They work with these animals every day
They can tell you which ones are good with kids/house trained/etc - also get some books - if you want an animal to be a constant companion you will probably want a dog - if you want a cat that you want have to let out all the time you may want to get two at the same time so that they can keep each other company while you are out

Pick an animal that suits your personality. If you are an outdoors person, a dog is great, indoor people, cats are better. If you have small children or there are small children around your house, there are certain type of dogs that do not work well around kids. Go to a search engine such as askjeeves.com and do some research. An animal is a major life commitment. Don't rush into it.

Cats tend to be more independent, the total "me' thing; while dogs tend to be more reliant on you "the master". Cats are pretty easy to care for once they've been kitty litter trained. Dogs do require a lot more attention...they have to be trained, walked several times a day. As for what kind, I would personally visit the pet shelter (SPCA) nearest you and see what is available...these are lovable animals that are desperate for a home and I'm sure you'll find a good match.

Depends on your lifestyle. If you are home a lot and can give a lot of attention to a dog, then get a dog. It just depends on what you are looking for. You have to have time to walk dogs and give them plenty of love. Cats just kinda do their own thing so to speak and aren't quite as affectionate normally. They aren't as high maintenance as a dog.
Also, it depends on how much room you have. If you have a little place i would get a cat or a small dog. Big dogs require a lot more exercise and get bored easily which makes them destructive where they start chewing up everything.

i am more of a dog type person cause i like to play.....cats just like to lay around and not do too much...BORING!!! I love small dogs best but there are some great bigger ones too.....
i am not being much help but there are so many different kinds of dogs out there to chose from that only you can really know what is best for you.....go to your local dog shelter or pound because mix breeds usually tend to be the best and most loyal!!!
Good Luck!!!

If you want a pet you can snuggle with, get a dog, they are more affectionate. Here are some good family dog breeds Boston terriers, poodles, bichon frise, golden retriever, lab, MINIATURE schnauzer (have had bad experiences with standard and giant schnauzers, don't behave), french bulldog, and welsh corgi. Males tend to be more calm.

If YOU, YOURSELF don't know, then DON"T GET ANY PETS!!!
Its a life long commitment for you to take care of that animal. It could live 10-20 years depending on what type of pet you choose. You must provide food, shelter and vet care by law. It doesnt sound like you are ready to take on that type of commitment right now. Be fair to yourself & a pet that you might choose to bring home. Make sure its what you REALLY want!

Well, I think that's easy- if your are looking for an independent animal - get a cat, but if you are looking for an animal that's there for you when you get home, be your friend even if you scolded him for something he did - then get a dog. They are so cute, loving and faithful. Can you tell I love my Max?
