Does anybody know how to use horse wormer on dogs? Is it safe? What kinds do you use and how much do you give them?

From here on out, if you dont have a valid answer to the question, dont waste your time for the lousy two points you receive for running your mouth. I am looking for other peoples experience using horse wormer paste with ivermectin as a dog wormer. If you do not know what you are talking about, dont answer. I have seen vets do this and am looking for experiences to add on to what I already know.

Sorry, but that would be a pretty stupid thing to do if you don't know what you're doing.

About the only thing 'stupider' would be to ask total strangers on the Internet, who have no verifiable medical training, what dose to give. Did it ever occur to you that many people might tell you WRONG and cause you to kill your dog??!

EDIT: If you are looking for 'experiences to add onto what you already know'.....you need to be getting those experiences from THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE MEDICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING to know what they're talking about.....your veterinarians....no one else. I have seen far too many dogs harmed (some irreversibly), only to have the owner defend himself by saying, "but I read it on the Internet..." or, "I was told by a breeder...."

And FYI....most of us DON'T answer 'for points'....(anyone who does has serious issues, imo)....most of us professionals answer for one reason and one reason only. That's because we have dedicated our lives to keeping pets safe and healthy so they can have happy, pain-free lives and be good companions for as long as possible.....and we hate to see people make stupid mistakes that are counterproductive to that.

Years ago my vet recommended giving Ivomec or Zimectrin horse paste to my dog who had an allergic reaction to the daily heartworm preventative available at the time. Together we figured out that the approximate dosage for his size. Once Heartgard became available the Ivomec paste was still way cheaper and I continued using it on all my dogs. Now I have much smaller dogs and it's too difficult to determine a proper dosage with any sort of accuracy, so I use Heartgard. Ivermectin is not tolerated by collies and some other related breeds, but if you have a large breed that has no problems with Heartgard, Ivomec paste should work just as well.

I have seen dogs die or go blind from an overdose of ivermectin. It is NOT a good idea to give it to your dogs. Some people do, and that is their choice, but be aware that it can cause serious problems!!!!!
Dog wormer is CHEAP!! They make Safeguard granules OTC now, which is the same as Panacur. They make Tradewinds tapeworm tablets, which are the same as Droncit. You can get those OTC also. Nemex is OTC and does round and hookworms. There is no reason to use horse wormer!!!!!!!

Yes, vets give ivermectin for certain reasons, but it is not without risk. I know a person that has three BLIND Beagles due to MISREADING the syringe in a hurry and giving too much. It is too risky in my opinion.

Worms that infest horses are not necessarily the same worms that will be a problem in dogs. Some are, some aren't. The actual medicine used in *some* horse wormers are safe for use in dogs -- and are in fact used in dogs -- but the concentration is different for each species.

Dog dewormers are inexpensive, so I'd recommend you purchase dewormer for a dog. If you want to post the specific medicine and concentration in the horse wormer you probably already have, I will give you a specific answer, but in general, it's not worth the bother.

I know alot of horse people that use equine wormer on dogs... it is the same thing just need to dose it down for the dogs size..if you give to much you can poison your dog..do not give it to puppies so basically if you have never done it and have no idea what you are doing.. I would recommend against it without first consulting a vet

I have used horse wormer on my dogs for many years and all are still alive and well and worm free. I use the brand Strongid paste. It is yellow in color. When I was first told about this , I was told to give the dog just a "lick" and it will be fine. I measure about less than half an inch of paste onto my finger and smear it onto the roof of the dogs mouth. It does work and I have not had any trouble. I have 5 dogs, one of which is an Old English Bulldog that is 13 years old, so I must be doing something right. Hope this helps!

A horse de-wormer is made for horses. Since horses are such large animals the dosage would be formulated for their size and therefore is not safe for smaller animals like dogs. Take your dog to a vet or get a de-wormer specifically for dogs.

What kind of dog is it??? Herding/collie breeds have been know to have BAD reactions to it even die from it. Long ago before heartgaurd breedes and hunters used it alot, but you need to be very careful, it can be deadly. Have your dog tested for heartworms first though. Exspecially if you live below TN, cuz if he/she has heartworms it will kill them. If you use a wormer make sure it has Ivermectin and paraziquental that is what is in the heartgaurd, and the ivermec kills the round, hook, and heart worms while the par.. kills tapeworm. -k- Good luck and becareful.

NO! You can get wormers specifically made for dogs for pretty cheap.
Do not use a horse wormer!
