I know there are a lot of great books out there for kids, but I really want to focus on the classics. The books that will prepare kids for reading Homer, Shakespeare, Dickens, Heminway, and all the great authors.

Anything by E B White ... Charlotte's Web, The Trumpet of the Swan

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe has beautiful writing and language which is great preparation for the classics.

So is Tom Sawyer!

I loved The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles which is written by Julie Andrews (Edwards).

Also, The Boxcar Children series is soooo exciting, especially the first, it really gets kids into books!!

The NEW Hardy Boys are good.

Anything that will get kids IN to reading is a good way to get them to later read the classics. I am reading Where The Red Fern Grows to my son, while he reads Charlotte's Web. WTRFG is so much great language, but harder to read. So he is introduced to unknown language. But CW is so fun, and he can see the movie for a comparison.

I could go on and on, but I will stop here...

Charlotte's Web by EB White!! But I recently bought my favorite book from my childhood off eBay...paid a lot for it, since it came from Germany....Harry by the Sea....I used to drive my mom crazy to please read Harry!! She couldn't understand how I could never get tired of it...I am so thankful that my mom emphasized reading from the time I was very very young...starting with Highlights magazine, then Teen and Seventeen magazines....she's gone now, but can you believe I'm still in touch with my high school English teacher? Reading is one of the most important things you can do with your child, regardless of what it is you're reading....
