It's actually a very strange relationship. The Irish may hate the government and what they did to them over the last 800 years but on a one-to-one basis the English and Irish get on very very well. This is probably because they are culturally very similar; They like the same tv shows, same sports, speak the same language, same sense of humour etc.
20 years ago the Irish would have had an inferiority complex but now the two nationalities are on par with each other and the Irish are more confident in their dealings with the English. If you want proof of the two nationalities getting on with each other do to Dublin during a Rugby international between Ireland and England. The English fans come over to mix with the Irish in the pubs and watch the game (those that can't get tickets). There's never any trouble, just good fun. The same can't be said for soccer fans of course - they're a different breed of animal.

Whilst its true that the Irish have many hang ups about the English because of the way they were treated by them for centuries but the English done this to many countries and as they were the foremost power in the world at that time they could do as they pleased.
But I don't believe the Irish really dislike the English people per se as they (the English) were not to blame for their governments policies in Ireland and the rest of the world. Nevertheless the Irish like so many other countries like to have a free shot at the English but that is not really hate.
Life is too short to hate people as hate destroys those that hate just as much as the object of that hate.
Anyway the Irish have got their own back over the years what with migrating to England and breeding their irishness into the English so that the English people as a race really don't exist anymore.
Except of course when major sporting events occur and they can raise their union jack and pretend they still are a major sporting power when in fact many of their so called stars have Irish heritage. Wayne Rooney is a case in point although I probably will regret using him as an example.

First off most Irish people dont hate the english. Sometimes we play up to this idea especially when glasgow celtic are playing. But to be honest Most Irish people watch english tv programmes, listen to english bands and support english football teams. Ok so there was 800 years of oppression that alot of people are sore about. But our hate is a pantomime most of the time. Real hate is what the al qaeda have for america. I dont think the irish and the english come anywhere near that!

I'm English and have always found Irish people most charming and courteous. Maybe your encounters have been less successful, keep trying there are plenty of charming and non bigotted Irish out there. Remember Ireland was a place of settlement for the English for centuries, especially around Dublin, I have untold distant and not so distant Anglo-Irish cousins.

Irish People DO like the English on the whole. Though I have certainly encountered some definite ignorance in the opposite direction.
BTW don't listen to that 800 years rubbish, I would remind anyone who wrote that that:
a) Strongbow was a WELSH NORMAN
and
b) He was invited to take part in a native power struggle
Read your history!

That's Bullshit. Most Irish people don't care where people are from, so long as they are nice and decent people. It's usually the radicals and the dickheads who say that they hate the English. The majority of people are happy to accept people for who they are.
The funniest thing is that the majority of Irish people who support a soccer team support an English team, but would also say that they hate "the brits"
Figure that one out!

Because the English invaded Ireland, took much of the land from the Irish, and forced many of the Irish into poverty or death.
