No - not English manners, just bad manners!

Maybe I was just brought up well but my mother taught me to; eat with my mouth shut, not put my elbows on the table while eating, ask to be excused from the table when leaving, stay at table until everyone else has finished their meals, sit up straight, ask for people to pass rather than leaning across to reach condiments or drinks, use my knife and fork correctly, not burp, not talk about inappropriate subject matter, finish my mouthful before speaking... I think you get the picture! I'm English by the way.

It is and always will be bad manners to eat with your mouth open in England. The english way to eat is slow with the mouth closed in between bites. lyn

No, it's completely an individual matter rather than one of British society. I used to eat with my mouth open (albeit unknowingly) until my friend (whom this behaviour had been driving her crazy for at least 2 years) brought it up in conversation. Shocked and embarrassed as I was at the time, I'm now very conscious not to do it for fear of offending. If you do tell your boy friend, do it nicely!!!!

This is not normal English manners at all. We should all chew with our mouths closed; that is the norm. If your boyfriend has such foul manners, I wonder what other dirty habits he has??? You should find out, because he sounds like a real slob.

Pretty stereotypical attitude there. Just because one person does something, it doesn't mean everyone does. I'm sure there's plenty of people from wherever you are that also eat with there mouth open. Also pretty sure there's probably someone with really bad B.O but I wouldnt assume that this goes for everyone from that country!

We English are strange like that. We do open our mouths to eat and even drink - unless it's drinking through a straw. We even eat french fries wrapped in paper and we call them chips.... Walking home in the dark make sure he wipes his hands after eating his chips or you can get very greasy marks on your clothes in very embarrassing places.....

Definitely not.
He is either a spoilt brat from a rich family, or is of very low class.
Anyone doing that in England would be asked to stop.
It's a disgusting habit.

The English have no manners, and by the time he's 21 he probably won't have any teeth left in his mouth. Not only don't the English have any manners, but they have terrible dental hygiene as well.

No its not but bizarrely some people don't realise they're doing it. I think its the grossest habit! My dearest friend who's well educated and refined in every other way eats like a monkey. i can't fathom it!
