Air Force Tech Sgt. Richard B. Fitzgibbon, Jr. He was murdered by a fellow airman on June 8, 1956. His death was formally recognized by the Pentagon as the first American to die in that war. The first death of an American serviceman in Vietnam occured September 26, 1945. He was killed in action by the communist Vietnimh near Hanoi.

For extra credit, the last American soldier to die in combat in Vietnam was Lt. Col. William B. Nolde. He was killed on January 27th, 1973.
