You will only need a Drivers Licence and a Credit Card to get on the plane, Having a Passport is not needed, but I have found that even if you are not planing to leave the country, its good to have a passport. Its a photo ID that nobody questions.

Even post-9/11, travelling within the US isn't that different.

If you're flying, the more photo ID you have, the better. A passport on a domestic flight isn't necessary, but it is excellent federal ID.

If you're staying only within NYC, you don't need a driver's license; you're better off without a car.

Carry whatever ID you'd need in SoCal - it's still the same country, after all.

If you are traveling to NY from outside of the US then you'll definitely need your passport. Otherwise, I assume that your driver's license would be fine to use for ID. These days, however, its probably better to bring both of the items and include your ssn, your school picture id, proof of address, and any other thing that you can think of.

It depends where you are taveling from. If within the US and you're not driving through Canada then your license would be fine.
