How about braiding it for your sports activities?
There's also something called a French braid which can be done alone (although I've never been able to do it!) which starts up on your head (as opposed to taking two "pigtails" and braiding them into long plaits) and effectively keeps your hair out of your face. It also looks very, very cool (sophisticated).
What's so bad about wearing your hair down when you're not doing sports? Does your hair have a lot of body, is it really curly or extra frizzy? All these things can be remedied with a good conditioner and careful blow drying.
Frankly, I think it's beautiful to just let your hair "do it's own thing" especially when it's long. It certainly is a heckuva lot easier than sleeping on rollers or having chemical perms, etc.!
Natural red heads are very rare! Wear your "mane" with pride!

For your sports: what you can do is take a cute clip and pull your bangs back and on top of your head from your face/forehead. Don't do it too tightly, though, as you know you can't afford it.

Start giving (very gentle) heat treatments to your hair with a hot iron, maybe? Straighten it at the ends a bit (assuming you have already-straight hair) or take soft pillow rollers and put them in your hair at night, and in the morning, remove them for great curls.

The best advice I could give you is to flip through some magazines to get ideas from celebrities with longer hair, because they tend to wear it down more often.

Or hell, you could even get a new haircut.

Try wearing head band or half up. I think your biggest enemy is probably the rubber band. There are other ways to wear your hair up. Clips and barrettes are great. I have long heavy thick hair and I refuse to wear mine down all the time. Just ease into it. Try new clips and pulling it half up. Also research some easy to do hair styles on the net. Talk to your hairsytlist too. If you are worried about going bald there is always Rogain for woman and it helps. I have had friends that used it.

a really hot hair style you could get is a layered look with side bangs.

hair styles:
braids- 1 or 2, french braids (search how to french braid on Q search), side braid
ponytails- half, side, pigtails
buns- loose and messy
gel- scrunch it
iron- straighten it, curl it, crimp it (if its in in ur school only)
acessories- headbands, scarves, cute clips, cute bows, bandanas.
hair part- part it on the side

here are some suggestions to get wavy/curly hair. i havent tried some of them, but i ve heard that they work-
curl with iron or rollers
put some hairspray in ur hair before going to bed and the tossing and moving will create random waves
braid ur hair and when u remove it there will be waves
put some defining product in ur hair and keep twirling it around ur finger. then, finger comb gently through to separate the waves
use sea salt spray or surf spray. sea salt will give really pretty beach waves
scruch it with gel

don't worry. i used to wear my hair up every single day, but then i got hair conscious, got a new hair cut, and now i wear it down a lot.

good luck!!

try wearing it down and taking hair ties to school for your sports if you need them. and when you wear it down, you can wear it half up with a big hair clip or pull it out of your face a little with smaller clips.bobbi pins.

i would go get my hair done every other week, or i would get a wig some tracks or wear it down untill your hair grows back.thats what i would do. Don't pull so tight when you put it in a ponytail

DEAR,
YOU ARE FAR TOO YOUNG TO WORRY ABOUT IT!
TAKE A SOCIAL STUDIES CLASS, AND FOCUS YOUR ATTENTION ON THE DIVERSE (VARIED) WAYS IN WHICH EACH CULTURE DIFFERS
.
Do not think about your hair in this ONE class.
