I've given money to the homeless. But beyond that, I prefer helping teach them life skills so that someday, they won't have to settle for mere panhandling. Yes, I've volunteered at the shelter.

I have and I will again in the future. I am cautious, however. There are several "homeless" people who wander around downtown during peak times asking for money. I'd love to know how much they collect each week. We don't contribute to the regulars.
I don't hate the homeless. I can understand their frustration with society and with authority. A good example: my daughter lives in an edition that has a homeowners' association. Do the homeowners have a say in any of the rules and regulations? No. If I wanted to plant a tree in her back yard, I am supposed to get permission from the homeowners' association. Why when none of the people who respond when you call are residents of the edition? I could ask the neighbors and then plant the tree but I won't. I'll plant the tree. It's my daughter's yard and she wants a tree. End of story.
Not every homeless person wants to be helped. They prefer their vagabond life-style. As long as they leave me alone, I'm ok with that. And I'll contribute a dollar or two especially in the winter.

No I would not give money directly to homeless people. However, if I could get them a meal, or find them a place to stay - I would be happy to do that. I also help with many fund raising missions that help benefit the homeless and poor.
There are just too many people on the streets that have alcohol and drug problems - and I am not going to enable them in that lifestyle choice.

No, I like to help people. I don't live in a big city. I was approached by a homeless person once and she asked me to buy her something to eat. I did. Money may not help in most cases. Churches in my area also keep homeless people over night during the winter and give them food. I'm sure there are other ways they are helped. Are they helped enough? No. But don't assume that money will help them - it may help them only to get drunk or high. If all you can do for them is to give them money, you may want to take the chance that they will spend it wisely. It's just that you don't know who will and who won't.

I used to give money until one day I gave money to a homeless person, he said he needed food and I went into the store and he was buying lottery tickets.
I don't hate the homeless, some people have had bad experiences that put them in that position. Others...drinking and drugs put them there. Either way they need help.

No. My friend's daughter is one of those pan handlers on the street everyday. It it her choice not to work and not to live at home. She enjoys her lifestyle and doesn't like to conform to societies rules. She earns a living this way. I choose not to help people like this. She is not homeless. Little do they know, the people that give her money help pay her bills including a cell phone!
Where we live we have homeless shelters and organizations that you can donate to to help those less fortunate who really are in need. They offer meals and a place to sleep, get resources for getting help they need. If they are truly homeless they should seek help there.
Giving to those on the street only increases the problem. People make a living out of it.

Yes, I would.
"hate" is a powerful term. Why would I hate the homeless? They are God's children and they didn't do me any harm.
My goodness anyone can go homeless in seconds.

No, I dont hate the homeless. If it were a family on the side of the road, then YES, Id give them some money, but if it were just a guy on the side of the road, then NO.....he could be working at several places, instead of just sitting there begging.

no, I don't hate the homeless. I think many of them are doing themselves a disservice in living the way they do. I don't like to support this lifestyle unless I see that they are crippled or if they are at least working through street music or creating palm tree flowers for donation.
STILL, there's work for just about everyone. My blind autistic cousin is sometimes put to work. He made some nice bulletin boards with wine corks.

Absolutely not. Homelessness is a choice. Everyone in this world makes choices everyday. Their choices have brought them to the place they are. We could all be homeless, but we choose to pay our rent rather then buy drugs or booze or gamble. Thats the real honest truth.
