My cat loves people but I work 40 hours a week and would like to get him a friend.
I'm pretty sure he hates all Male cats. When the Neighbors male cat comes to the sliding glass door my cat attacks the glass trying to get at the other cat.

But I think he might be ok and even like a Female cat. But how do I test this? I would hate to have to take a cat back to the pound.

I got him from the humane society at 5 years old, declawed in front. For all I know he has always been an only cat and likes it that way. But I feel bad when he is home alone.

Yes I would only get another declawed cat. Already declawed that is. I would not have that done to a cat but if I can find one that needs a home then thats great.

You didn't say if your cat was neutered or not. I'm assuming so, since the humane society usually does that before adoption.....
Anyway, your cat would probably learn to get along with either another neutered male OR a female, after an adjustment period. I recently brought in another adult cat to my house, with an older cat and a dog. There was some initial hissing and spitting and figuring out who was going to be at the top of the pecking order, but they've all settled in nicely. The two cats even lay together across the back of the couch and gaze out the window. Sometimes they play-chase each other up and down the stairs.
You should know that you have to keep the litter box cleaned more often.....often cats don't like the smell of another cat in their bathroom territory and may find somewhere less appropriate to do their business if you don't keep it clean enough.
All in all, tho, I think it's a good idea to have some company for an animal left alone most of the day.

well if he is attacking the back door when he sees the other cat @ the door it may mean he doesnt like other cats in general!i would maybe bring ur neighbors cat over for a visit or borrow a female cat from a friend! this way u can find out if ur cat will accept another cat coming into his territory! or sometimes cats just like dogs better! if u live in place where u r aloowed to have a dog i would look into that maybe! it all depends on ur cat and what he will and will not accept in his household! Good Luck!

Well since hes declawed you have to be careful if you get another cat because if they fight he would get hurt but you can always go to a animal shelter and check out some female cats and the cat and your cat in one room can see if they get along if they do then get it. Cats do get lonely and not like dogs who sleep all day and look out the window and bark at people when your gone. I think getting another cat is a great idea. Just see how he does with a cat that he can pick out. I hope he is neutered first.

If a friend or a relatives has a female cat you might want to see if your cat likes the other cat. If you do do this you may want to try more than one cat because it might just not like that cat or just like that cat. Also it may just not like cats it doesn't know very well. Like I have a cat that hated this new cat that we got for a while but after a few weeks when it got to know the new cat it love it.

Good luck!

Well just get lots of things for him to play with so he doesnt think that your just running off and coming home. From the question and detale you put it he loves to be home alone. I had a cat that did the same thing my mom and dad worked alot of hours like you and i always was at skool or at a friends house everday! And there was no one home till like 8 at night. My cat loved it, we didnt take her to see if she liked other cats, she just laid back and enjoyed the time that she had by herself! So what you should do is find a gurl cat and put her on the opposite side of the door as your boy cat and see what he does.
