"Religion is doing what you are told no matter what is right. Moral is doing what is right no matter what you are told." I don't know who said that, but it was never more true than today.
Now, there is a difference between morals and morality. Morals are core values that you hold dear, such as not killing people, don't take stuff that's not yours, not lying, don't destroy other people's property, stuff like that. Morality is when you have an organization that tells people what their core values should be. The trouble with morality is that the organization decides what values should be stressed based on the organization's particular plans, not on the health and well-being of the organization's average members. For example, morals tell us that if two people are in love, they should get married (if they want to) and start a life together. Morality tells us that those two people have to be a man and a woman. Morals tell us that sex should be between two consenting people. Morality tells us that those people should be a man and a woman, should involve penis to vagina contact only, should involve the man on top only, and that sex as a subject should have a connotation of secrecy and shame. Do you see the difference?
Religion deals in morality, not morals. There's no money or power in morals.

Just one question, are you christian or atheist/agnostic (or a different religion)? because if you follow evolution then saying humans are seperate from animals would be hypocritical because according to evolution we are just animals that evolved like all other living creatures. Also in your last sentence the key word is should. Many people aren't moral which is sad to me but morality is usually a part of any religion. Therefore most religious people are moral. I'm not saying that non religious people can't be moral but people who aren't tend to be non-religious.

Christianity has naver claimed to hold the monopoly on morality. Cultists, yes, but not true Christianity.
Why Be Moral?
http://www.bringyou.to/apologetics/p1.htm
Whole and Fraction: Truth, Life and Love
Everyone needs to love and everyone needs to be loved. This is the subject that atheists hate speaking about. If this world is truly "survival of the fittest," why do people love? Love means self-sacrifice. This truly crushes Darwin's theory. The limitation to love is hate. You cannot find one person who has never hated before. There is no person in the world that would not want to be loved. Since a person wants to be loved, he needs to love as well. This is something that a person will definitely desire. He knows that it is something that can "overcome" and nothing can "stop" it. The only bad point to it is that one may abuse it. One can abuse it with sex. He would want pleasure instead of love and this will cause disunity among the couple.
To have joy and peace, we then have to turn to something that has Truth without error, Life without death, and Love without hatred. We would not desire this if it does not exist. There would not be a fraction if there is no whole. Perfect Truth, Life and Love then therefore is one who IS Truth, Life, and Love. This is the definition of God. It is not something we can deny because if we do, there is no hope in finding the perfect essential needs. To say there is no God is to say there is no such thing as perfect Truth, Life, and Love. And who in the world would want to argue from that point of view?

If a person believes in Christ and does his will, he WILL BE a moral person - not to say that he will never make mistakes. Some people call themselves Christians and do all sorts of immoral things. That doesn't mean there is anything wrong with Christianity, the person is just insincere in using the label "Christian" in referring to himself.
I also believe, however, that Christians are not the only moral people.

Christians don't have a monopoly on morality. God has written his law on the hearts of man. Christians/Judaism just has the way to make sense of why we have morality. An atheist has morality, and may be more moral than some professing Christians but can have no rationale as to why they are moral, or why others should be as well.
I'm sorry if I'm being narrow minded, but what is your reason. What makes you say I must do the right thing here even though I don't want to. Why must you, if you have no one but yourself to answer to.

You are absolutely right! The moral majority in this country is NOT necessarily Christian. Yet Christians get blamed and persecuted for it, because people who prefer immorality are quite angry about thinking that others are telling them how to live.
Christianity actually goes BEYOND morality, love and fellowship. Christianity challenges us to turn the other cheek, love our enemy.... much more than most people, even Christians themselves, are really willing to accept or carry out.
Great question !!!

You are right...they are two separate things altogether. You can have perfect morals, and still go to hell. Conversely, you can be very "religious" and still have very poor morals--as far as your personal behavior.
I think people confuse the two, because if one is trying to live a "Christian Life", they should also be living a very moral life, in order to please God. Thus people begin to see both as one and the same.
Plus, "moral" is a somewhat relative term...there are some basics, like not killing, stealing & hurting others that is pervasive through all cultures, while lying in certain situations, being unfaithful to one's spouse, using bribes and the like are acceptible in some places, while eating certains foods is considered immoral in other societies.

You can't serve Jesus without morals,we are to become as He is in a since...That means we have to walk as perfect as He does...People need to remember they are just human and we as Christains do make alot of mistakes but we ask to be forgiven that is one reason why we are able to stand and tell about Jesus. The difference between Christains and Athiest is we have ask to be forgiven for our sins and ask Jesus in our hearts,,True Christains, now there are lots of Christains out there that act the same as Athiets and I see no difference,,they come with no love bearing no fruit at all. They also will come unto Judgement of why they walked in the manner which they walked..The Lord spoke so clearly,It is better to never have known him than to have and not accepted him...That goes for everyone,,not just ones who don't know God..We can walk on this earth but what we do with our lifes is what is important..

I have no idea why some people think being a moral person is contingent upon believing in a deity. It's like... gosh... would they be knocking over 7-11's and cheating on their taxes and beating their dogs if they didn't God telling them "now don't you do that"?

In fact, everything you mention here is distinctly human. But consider this. Fellowship, love and loyalty are also present in the animal kingdom. What separates us is our consciousness and our understanding of our mortality.
