I have used Tripod for Years!! tripod is awsome although if you want it to be www.___.com , it isnt free. Mine is : http://fishin-man-dan.tripod.com which really that isnt long. its just : ___.tripod.com . Its very easy to use too!

You aren't going to get a dot-com site for free, it will at least have the host domain name plus yours.
But Myspace is free and short named, and you can add just about anything on there.
I have a family dot-com site, registered and hosted by 1 and 1. It's not free, but I pay about $26 every 6 months for a 12 page site! Very cheap, no banners, you do not have to be a web designer to use it- pre-made templates are available, I can put whatever I want on it, and I also have up to 200 email accounts with MY domain name!

well its hard to get just a .com for free and i don't really know any but have you tried myspace?
I have several there and they are free and you don't have to download anything.
