Religionists are obviously not all total idiots, many are very smart people, some a lot smarter than me or other atheists, yet these otherwise intelligent people choose to beleive in magical beings that they have never seen, and can't prove exist... Doesn't seem all that rational to me. is it conditioning?

I would guess that no matter how intelligent, the great majority of people are afraid to believe that this "life" is all there is and all there ever will be and when they die that will be it, hence a magical story to ease their fears about their own mortality and death and dying. Certainly religious belief does not stop so called sin or abuse or coveting for example: Prieist 's molesting children, religious right preachers stealing peoples savings, patronizing prostitutes and propositioning pages on Capitol Hill. also religion and religious views often can be used as Power.
