I got it when I was in Korea. Its basically along the same lines of the Haz pay but it has a couple more rules for it.

Nothing against the person below me but I have gotten save pay every time I have gone overseas and I have always done only my job. Never the job of an Officer or a Warrent Officer

I don't like to cut and paste long explanation. Check the source link for the exact answer to your question.

Basically, it has to do with enlisted accepting an officer or warrant officer appointment.

EDIT: I've checked SEVERAL sites and a military forum and they all link Save Pay to the same site that I found the first source info at. However, I checked further and added "deployment" to the search and came up with this:

e. Hardship Duty Pay-Location (HDP-L). Indicated as Save Pay on the Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), is payable to all Service Members on a monthly basis according to location and living conditions. Currently, HDP-L is payable at a rate of $150 per month for all Service Members
assigned to Area-I in Korea. Deployed Service Members will continue to receive HDP-L.

I'm adding the link for that info. It has some other very good info about the LES and entitlements that you should be receiving. There's a few things that have changed since our last deployment. I'm glad I found this info.

Good luck!!
