it sounds like it could be kennel cough. you can use robitusin for coughs. i work at a boarding kennel and when a dog gets the cough we give him some of robitusin to ease the cough and then we call the vet. if it is a cough with a gag at the end then it is kennel cough but if it is a cough without the gag then it could be something else. you will need to take the dog to the vet. try the robutusin and see how that works and then if the cough doesn't calm down then take to the vet.

DO NOT USE HUMAN MEDICINE ON YOUR PET WITHOUT A VET"S ADVICE!

Okay, no more yelling...

Coughing in dogs can be caused by many things: irritation, bacteria (such as Kennel Cough/tracheobronchitis) and viruses, allergies, parasites-- ESPECIALLY HEARTWORMS, tumors, heart disease... and so on.

Here's what I would do: Let your dog have plenty of fresh water tonight, then schedule an appointment with your vet tomorrow morning. If your dog hasn't been tested for heartworms lately, especially if he isn't on preventative or if he's missed monthly doses, have him tested. Also have a stool test done for intestinal parasites. Some intestinal parasites, such as roundworms, can migrate to the lungs and cause coughing. Meanwhile...

Coughing can be caused by many things. It could be an illness, or it could be an allergy, if you recently changed foods, or anything else in his environment. If you changed anything, switching back to the original should help. If it is an illness, it's best not to try using human medicines on him, as they could do more harm than good. Get him to a vet as soon as possible is the best bet.

Is it a nonstop cough? Did it begin suddenly? If so, something could be hung in his throat and may need to be removed quickly.

Use your own good judgment... Benadryl is a good antihistamine that will help with lots of minor allergic symptoms and could stop the cough. You could give it a try, and if it's going to work, it will within a few minutes (30-60). HOWEVER, if something should be stuck in his throat, putting more food or liquid down it would not be good.

Not sure I can offer a really safe suggestion...

Look in it's throat. There may be a bit of bone, grass, twig or similar stuck there.
The vet should be open tomorrow. Be first in the queue.
