It takes an act of Congress to re-install the draft. Bush has spoken about it and considered it, being it a fact that he decimated the troops in Iraq.

BUT...

I know there will be strong opposition by citizens, and am most certain that would not go through.

If it did, however, as a mother of two young sons, I will do whatever in my power to keep any of them from taking any of my children away to be killed in a petty war. And I am not afraid to admit it: Mess with my babies and you mess with a mad tigress.

Now - it's an all volunteer army. They (Congress) would have to reinstate the draft. VERY difficult in this climate - however, this climate also brings the probability that the next war will be the LAST war. WE'LL all be drafted whether we want to be or not. If we're still alive after the first strike. Any way you look at it - this little monkey has us over the proverbial barrell and he's giggling 24/7.

The military is normally all-volunteer. In an emergency Congress can call for a draft. As with any other congressional act, the president can request it of them or veto it or neither.

Meanwhile, all men in the US must register with Selective Service between the ages of 18 and 25.

Since post war Vietnam the US has had a volunteer army, and it has remained that way until present times. However, the option for a draft is still out there, although it way take a congressional vote to so activate the draft.

No one is forced to join the military today because we have a all voluntary military, no draft. I wish we were like some countries where you , men & wemen at age 18 have to serve at least 2 years in exchange for a free education. I had to go to war to get the goverment to give me a free education. Come to think of it , it was not free I earned it.

its all voluntary but when a male turns 18 he must sign up in the selective service system. its just there in case they bring the draft back. the thing that sucks about it is that if they don't then they can't get financial aid(at least that's what i heard).

STUDENT FINANCIAL AID
Men, born after December 31, 1959, who aren't registered with Selective Service won't qualify for Federal student loans or grant programs. This includes Pell Grants, College Work Study, Guaranteed Student/Plus Loans, and National Direct Student Loans.

During this War most of the fighting has been by national guardsman(weekend warriors) No Disrespect intended, who signed up to protect our home land in case of an attack and war here in America. And the brave men in our special Forces (Enlisted Men) who signed up and trained to fight and survive and win in the most extreme cases. They have all stepped up to the plate and knocked the ball out of the park. The problem is there is no end in sight and we cannot win this war spread out over half a continent. fighting 2 /3 different wars some that are only about someone Else's political and financial Gain. In past wars there was a draft and men and boys were forced to go against their will and fight. Often they were hung out to dry by the country who sent them. Someday there will be an end to this world and its senseless wars and our sons and daughters brothers and sisters and husbands and fathers won't have to sacrifice their lives any more but until that day all we can do is PRAY,PRAY, PRAY and see to it that when they come home they get the medical and financial assistance they and their families so desperately need.

All volunteers at this point.

The last draft was in the 1960s and 1970s during the Vietnam War.

We are currently at war and people are not being forced to Join. Only if the need becomes great would they force people to join. We call it a draft. It would kind of be like a lottery
