how is it that despite wearing trainers and socks whilst on holiday in Guatemala, when I took off my trainers there were still bite marks on the top of my feet from mossies.. [which were not there before I went out] how did they manage to penetrate both my shoes and socks???

First of all, if you are sleeping, mosquitoes definitely bite your face, particularly if all of the rest of you is covered up.(Lots of personal experience)Probably when you are awake you would brush them away before they could do it, whereas they can dive in elsewhere without you noticing.
As for the walk in the rain forest - are you sure they were mosquito bites? There is an insect called bete rouge (french name) which bites at the top of socks and places like that in rain forests - it is really itchy. Also there are things called sand flies which are really little, and sometimes it takes awhile for the bites to show up, as someone else suggested, might have got those bites in the hotel?
Citronella oil works great to keep off the mosquitoes - but it's pretty pungent, don't know whether you'd like the scent!

Well i've got news for you , they do ! my 8yr old daughter was bitten on both eyelids only last week so they do . Probably the reason it doesn't happen often is that you would notice them and swat them away . PS. the day after my daughter was bitten she was mean't to have a school photo done , instead she spent the morning in the doctors and getting a course of anti biotics as they got infected .

I think the mosquitoes were trying to get your socks off before the fashion police got to you! They do bite faces, I had a bite on my eyebrow.

I have been bitten on the face before, so dont think they r fussy. As to how they bit when u had shoes off its possible u got bit before u put them on i.e in your hotel when u had got out of the shower, walking around etc. U dont keep your shoes on 24 hrs do u? Lemon is good for keeping them at bay. When i lived in Greece we could buy this lemon spray and it was brilliant.

Maybe that is a rash of some description, it's very unlikely they'd be able to get to your feet. They don't bite the face because you'd realise before they could suck your blood.

My friends face was covered in mosquito bites, eating garlic is meant to keep them away.

I though they liked to crawl into someplace dark before they do their biting?
I have never been bitten on the face either, now you mention it. They seem to like to get up my trouser legs.
