The real problem is not the statue of limitations...its what the opposite party decides to do.
Obviously they have to go to the police within a reasonable amount of time and they have to go to a hospital to get treated and have evidence that they were in fact assulted. They cant exactly wait a few weeks, say they were assulted, have no physical proof and expect you to go to jail.
99% of the assult cases (between men and men) usually result in one person paying money as compensation to the other. The Japanese courts practically BEG you and the other party to settle out of court.
At some point you may recieve a letter from a lawyer wanting money for damages to the client. Your best bet is to get your own lawyer when this happens and let him negotiate. Dont try to run away or move. The more apologetic you are,the better chance you have of lowering the costs.
I dont think there is a statue on assult like there is murder or theft....however there is a common wisdom about "reasonable time limits".
My advice, watch the mail box, pay the money, dont let your company or anyone else find out.
