My cat Toby thinks she can jump on the table. It is not acceptable. I constantly am taking her off the table and placing her down. I never yell at her or physical harm her in any way. Would it be cruel to spray her a tiny spirtz of water when she goes up there to teach her not to? Is this cruel? Shes not a kitten and is over 3 years old.

Of course that's not cruel. I love the spray bottle--we have a couple in our house that are always ready to spritz a misbehaving cat. It works great to teach them to stay off the plants, counters, dressers, tables, whatever. Just taking the cat off the table won't teach it that you don't want it there. Cats will keep doing what they want until it becomes unpleasant for them.
There are other products, if the spray bottle doesn't work, but the water bottle is the cheapest. For the hardcore cats there are 'scat mats' which give a mild electric shock, or there is a motion-activated sensor that sprays a scent that cats are supposed to dislike.
Good luck!

The spray of water is a very popular way to get cats to obey. They don't like water! Make sure that when you spray her, you say "No." in a stern voice (not a yelling one). That way she will not only attribute the water to the table, but to you saying no! This will help in case she jumps on the kitchen counter or something, that way you can just say "No." and she'll immediately jump off remembering that water = No. It will also save you from having to spray her in the first place. =) Hope that helps.

Its not really cruel but the cat might be mad at you for a while. Just taking it off the table wouldn't stop it from doing it because it will think "I can get on the table and she will just take me off then I can get on again without getting into any kind of trouble". You might want to try just pointing your finger at it and saying no or bad kitty but if that doesn't work you might want to try spraying it.

Good luck!

If you keep putting her down eventually she will get the message. Also, I think you can shake some pennies in a can when she does it so the won't get up there. I know a lot of people spray cats with water but my cats absolutely hated me when I did so and still did whatever it was I didn't want them to do so I stopped. You can put some sticky tape up on the table that is sticky on both sides so when she lands up there she will get tape on her. Cats also like the feel of aluminum foils on their paws.

Yes water is good. They also make those mats that you can place on your counter and they make an alarm sound and scare the poot out of any animal and they will learn real quick not to do it again. They also make scat mats, but it does a slight electrical shock so I am not sure about that. I would feel like it would be cruel, but you may need to soak him a bit before he will learn, but he will eventually because cats don't like water. Good luck.

The spray bottle is the most humane and quickest way to teach a cat! My cat loves to scratch the couch, we make a pssst sound as a warning then spray with the water bottle. Soon your cat will learn to associate the comand with the bad behavor and then you'll no longer need to spray her. Cats learn fast!

That is absolutely acceptable. Cats, just like children have to learn limits. Water does not harm your cat and does get her attention. Be forewarned though, this is not instantly successful. It will take a few times (sometimes more than a few) but you must be consistent (again, just as with a child.) Hope this helps!

spraying water is about the only thing to help her to learn not to get onto the table. no, it isn't cruel.

ok, so with our cats, we are unable to keep them off the table when we aren't at home. they do it no matter what. the one is older and just does whatever he wants. we have tried everything and it doesn't matter.

sprying her wont harm her, but hitting her or pretending to hit her might scare her, so the best way to teach her not to jump on the table would be just to spritz her with a little water, and in no time shell learn, [i have had my kitty for about 3 years too;) ]

That is the best way to train a cat. It may take some time but it should work.
