So, when you join the National Guard, what can you expect? How many National Guards have joined up and been sent away from home and for how long? How many DO NOT COME BACK HOME? Do they really tell these people before they sign up, what will be happening to them? Someone close to me wants to sign up, he is 17. Is this right for him? I am worried!

I do not want to discourage him. I have not said anything negative to him. I, of course, want him to just make the right decision for himself and his future. Anyone can make a decision and hope it is the right one, if it is not, they can change it, but not with the military. Once you are sworn in, you cannot get out or change your mind. If he joins, I hope it is for the love of our country, not for other frivolous things. I love this country and I am thankful for all of the men and women that put their lives at risk, and who leave their families for months on end. I am grateful for them, and GOD bless them!

He can also get killed in a robbery working at McDonalds or driving to work anywhere. Are you aware that you're more likely to be killed by just being in Washington DC than you are if you're US military in Iraq.

Intead of intsilling an unreasonable fear into him, you should support the young man and thank him for wanting to serve this great country.

There is a good chance he will be sent to the desert if thats basically what you are referring to. Dont worry though its a great experience and IMO the best part about being in the military...

This pic sums up the National Guard....
