Domesticated turkeys can't, but wild turkeys can fly up to 55 mph for short distances. They're also fast on their feet, hitting land speeds of up to 25 mph.

Yes. I've seen a male turkey on my grandparent's ranch knock people down that he thought were too close to the hens. It's like getting hit by someone swinging a pillow real hard. I'd have to bring some back who'd escaped over the fence by flying 3-4 feet over the ground (can't go very far). I live in the Atlanta (GA) rural outskirts now and have seen wild ones roosting on telephone lines. That's flying.

Nice skinny wild turkeys can fly, but their domesticated fat cousins are too heavy to fly. Unlike their wild cousins, the fat cousins live the life of luxury and ease on farms where they are fattened up for our Thanksgiving tables. The turkey is so popular that when our founding fathers sat around trying to figure out a national bird for this country, Benjamin Franklin tried to persuade them to adopt the Turkey as the national bird of the United States. The best I can figure is that he had a delicious turkey dinner before the meeting.

Farm raised turkeys can not fly.

But, wild turkeys can fly.

Their wings are made for short bursts of flight--not for flying long distances.

They travel from feeding site to feeding site by flying.

They can fly up to 50 miles per hour -- very fast for such large birds.

Yes, but not for very far. I've seen them (wild turkeys) with my own eyes fly up into, and down out of trees over 20 feet high. They will also fly close to the ground when chased.

Turkeys fly very well. They can't fly long enough to migrate but they have no problem going through the treetops to the other side of the forest if they want to.

Oh yes, you get alot of them there low flying turkeys in Norfolk. People employed by Bernard Matthews shoot them down and they end up in Turkey Burgers. Which is more humane really, because otherwise they tend to fly into the telegraph wires.
