Some folks consider every new person they meet a new friend...not me. I enjoy meeting new people in church, school, work, the gym, etc... but they are not in the "friend" catagory after just one meeting ;)
It seems you are a bit uncomfortable in calling this person by a name that is reserved for his "friends" - I would be too. Long explanation shortened... you can't go wrong calling him by his given or frist name - unless he insists on going by a nickname.
I suppose you have to decide for yourself at what point does an acquaintance become a friend (and also what is appropriate at the time of the introduction to a new acquaintance). If someone goes by a nic-name then I would say that I would feel comfortable with calling them by their nickname - however, if their "friends" have a nickname for them then I would not feel comfortable using that name since I would not consider myself in their "friend" catagory.
I love my circle of friends but I don't need to consider every new person I meet a new friend and I really don't want my acquaintances to presume that we are friends - at least not in the first six months of becoming acquaintanted.... A sincere, true friendship is a blessing and a treasure; it developes over time and should not be taken so entered into in the first five minutes of introductions...

Ask what the person prefers, and stick with that. Or since the person is going to become your friend, call that person Bucky.

I think what he meant by "my friends call me Bucky" is that that is what he prefers to be called. You wouldn't want to offend him by calling him Bob. He may take it the wrong way and think that you didn't like him straight off, even if that wasn't your intention. So call him Bucky, if thats not what he wanted, he wouldn't have told you! Good Luck!

I have a friend that we call "moo" because she loves cows...
anyway, when I introduce her to people I tell them about her nickname so that they are not confused when they hear other people calling her by something other than her real name...especially since the nickname can sound insulting.
If I were you I would ask, or call him by his real name. But don't be confused if people call him Bucky.

Here's a better solution: call him "Man with Mean Friends."
"Bucky" ought to be considered insulting!
